I was asked some time ago to post a video of my shop built marquetry saw. I built the saw from plans I obtained from John Eifler. I have only been doing marquetry for a few months and the saw has made it much easier than I had thought. Regarding the video, I have no idea what I am doing so I hope this works and is helpful. All suggestions and hints are greatly appreciated.

I missed the original posting of the marquetry saw. Great idea and I enjoy the video demonstration. Marquetry is something that I would like to do some day. This looks like a good way to get started.
Thanks for posting.

John, Great video and very easy to follow. Was just a little out of focus but could still see all that was going on.

Thanks Max. It seemed a little out of focus to me to but I thought it was just my age. Oh well, it is what it is. I was lucky to get it to work at all. I just talked to my Son-in-law and he helped me get a better copy loaded. How did we ever survive without our kids. I hope this is a little better.

John, Much sharper and really in focus. I wonder that myself sometimes about our kids, wonder if our folks ever felt that way about us?? Again great video and instruction.
I really need to make me one of those saws…. Do you drill your hole on the outside of the pattern line or right on the line? You said you used a 1/16” drill bit, isn’t that bigger than the blade you are using?

focus looked plenty good enough to me. Is it the back side of the blade that is cutting?

Max – Yes I drilled the whole right on the line. The 1/16” drill bit is much bigger than the blade but it helps an old guy like me see the whole better and makes it easier to thread the blade through. I do have some much smaller bits that I use when I need to make the whole as small as possible so it doesn’t show. There is a technique where you over cut in an area where two pieces of the pattern share the same line. This allows you to use a bigger bit because in the process the whole will be replaced by the new piece. This is a little hard to explain without pictures so I will try and take some pictures of the process and post them. Also I think we will be in Salt Lake the first part of September and I will try and remember to bring the plans for the saw so you can take a look at them.
TopamaxSuvivor – Yes you install the blade with the teeth pointing to the rear. This is backwards from the scroll saw. I generally use a 4/0 or 6/0 jewlers blade. They do break easy but if you buy them by the gross they are not expensive.

Interesting technique. I’ve tried similar methods with a regular jeweler’s saw, though without the bevel. This looks much simpler.

that is realy a great vidio showing how the saw works
maybee I´m a little havey in the sadle but why a 12 degree angle
on such saw, I can see why in this speciel case on the vidio
but ells if you cut with open lines I can´t figur out what
the 12 degree is good for

Dennis – It is my understanding that the 12 degree angle is so the positive piece fits snggly into the negative piece. the angle was determined based on the thickness of the blade and the veneeer. This was done by the individual that designed the saw. Basically you eliminate any gap caused by the kerf of the blade.
However, I think there wouldl be times you would want to do some cutting with the blade at 90 degrees to the work piece. So, when I make my next saw I want to make it so the angle can be adjusted. The current saw is fixed at 12 degrees.

What is the advantage of cutting with the blade pointed away form youi instead of towards like a scroll saw?

Great question TopamaxSuvivor. I don’t know that there is an advantage. I guess it would be up to the user. If you have the blade pointing forward, because of the direction of the angle, you would want to cut in a counter clockwise direction. For me it just felt right.

That would seem odd to me, but I guess I could get used to it.
