It has taken a while but I have finally got the carving of the tall back chair almost completed.

I honestly can’t imagine how Rohlfs came up with this carving design. I don’t even know how to describe it, however his Tall Back Chair is my favorite.

Here are some pictures of the back roughed out

and the front and back views with the carving completed.

My carving skills are rudimentary and my result does not have the fine and crisp detail of Rohlfs chair, but I’ll keep working on that. None the less I am happy with the outcome and I am looking forward to completing this chair.

There a number of spots where the grain tore out and I have patched those spots

with some epoxy and sawdust (the darker shiny spots on the photo).

I still need to spend some time tomorrow cleaning up the carving, removing some of the carving marks, touching it up here and there and sanding. Then on to assembly and upholstering the seat.

wow, that’s a lot of carving, coming together so nicely, a true piece of art and craft.
Right in the middle of the carved back, there looks like a cool looking dude with sunglasses on. Do you see it?

Hi Mark, Ya, I do now. Perhaps a handbar-ish moustache as well.
