If there is one thing that gets me more excited than woodworking, it is 3D printing. My best days are when I can 3D print something that indulges the word nerd within. That is why I'm so excited to share this with you!

I don't own a 3D printer myself (I would buy an 8" jointer first). I rely on Shapeways to print my models for me. Something great that Shapeways also does is to allow people to offer their items for sale

I have one of these cups from Shapeways and it is amazingly strong and stylish!

Note: This was the proto, the new version is larger to hold even more liquid awesome!

That is a really cool mug.

BTW: cnczone.com has started a new website, devoted 100% to 3D printing.

I haven't looked at it yet, but thought you might be interested.

According to the Shapeways materials info page.

Ceramic is Food Safe, Watertight and recyclable but not dishwasher safe.

It is heatproof to 932 degrees F., which would be some mighty hot coffee. :).

Tiny Stanley

Stanley must have been one heck of a woodworking super hero to have ALL those tools named after him.

Personally, I can't wait for the day when we can 3D Print tools. Then we can put our OWN names on them!!

This project is a step in that direction.

A 3D printed Stanley, er… make that David, No 4 handplane.

Gesture Finger Tool Wood Thumb

This was printed in a material called "Alumide" at Shapeways. It is a mixture of plastic and aluminum. Super lightweight and fairly durable.

While this one has my name on it, just like all of Mr. Stanley's tools, I can easily customize the model and put YOUR name on it. Just contact me here or a Shapeways and we can have one printed for you!

Jump light years ahead into the tool making future by visiting Shapeways today!

This link will take you right to the Tiny No 4.

Corner Center Tool

Many complex shop tasks can be simplified with basic geometry. One good example is laying out an Octagon on the end of a square board. The math required to calculate the distance from the corner to the next point on the Octagon is more than I care to pursue. Luckily, through the magic of geometry we can easily mark of this distance with a compass.

The only tricky part is getting the point of your compass to register into the corner of the board (This is especially tricky with dimensional lumber, where the edges have round-overs).

For perfect results, the point needs to bite into half wood and half air.

My solution is what I'm calling the Corner Center.

This little gizmo perfectly aligns the tip of your compass with true corner. The magnet in the body also holds your compass point securely, ensuring accurate results.

Here is the tool ready to assemble. As you can see, it comes in three parts. The body, the cup and the magnet. A dab of super glue ties it all together.

Brown Wood Flooring Beige Hardwood

First find the center of the board and set your compass to the distance from the center to the corner.

Wood Flooring Table Gas Composite material

With the compass set, just position the Corner Center at each corner and make a mark on each adjacent edge.

Wood Creative arts Art Engineering Hardwood

After you've made marks from all four corners, just connect the marks for a perfect Octagon.

Hand Wood Finger Creative arts Art

Check out my page on Shapeways for this tool and more good stuff.
