My Shop is 24×34 with 10 foot ceiling, adjacent to the shop I have my 10 X 14 office. I also have an attic above the workshop in which I store countless jigs, parts, machinery and finished pieces. I recently moved my shop and I am learning to live and work in a more confined space. Moving was and still is a major pain in the neck and I am still working on getting thing where I want them (it will take many years). One of the enjoyable feature of my new workspace is the large number of windows which lets in lots of natural light.

For those putting a shop together for the first time I wanted to include some thoughts on workfllow. I think workflow is very important to your productivity and enjoyment of your time in the shop.

Workflow

Workflow 6

I try to keep the construction process as streamed-lined as possible so machinery is placed in the order I generally use that particular machine and I try not to make long trips across the shop.

So generally the process would be as follows:

Wood Storage—-> Dimensioning
Dimensioning—-> Jointer
Jointer—-> Planer
Planer——> Tablesaw
Tablesaw—-> Milling (Hand tools, Router, etc)
Milling—> Assembly

For domestic hardwoods, I often have my local hardwood supplier dimension and surface rough lumber to standard dimension for me, as the cost is significantly cheaper than if I expended the time to dimension and surface the rough lumber. However, I do dimension and surface offsizes, exotic and figured wood myself.

Naturally the process is a little different for sheet goods, but for rough lumber the process is as discussed above.

What a nice shop space you have to work in!! You have organized your shop well and you have a nice set of tools to play with. Like PurpLev I really enjoyed seeing your bench. That is a tool that most of us would love to have in our shops. I would enjoy working in there.

Thanks for the pictures. I enjoyed visiting with you.

It’s a great looking space. I love the amount of light you seem to get in there.
