Thank you letting me showcase some of my retirement work on your website. I really like the concept and it gives me a chance to view the work of so many wood working artists.
I have been working with wood, light metals, and construction for over 66 years. After getting out of the Navy in 1945, I assisted my family erecting homes and small commercial buildings on Long Island during the post-WWII building boom. It was a natural transition to move on to swimming pool excavating machinery operations in the 50’s and 60’s. In that market everyone wanted a backyard pool, no matter how large the building lot, and I was there to accommodate.
In subsequent years I got into custom cabinetry, and custom made homes. In the late 60’s, in a partnership with some friends, we even renovated a ‘boat-tel’ in the Hamptons.
I finally retired from all my businesses in 1999, and moved to Southwest Florida. Positively, this has been the best time of my life. Working with wood has kept my mind and fingers nimble, despite my age.
I assisted contractors in Florida to build an economical house that had a large garage wood working shop equipped with easy access for bringing in raw materials. More importantly, the shop that was built has improved overhead lighting, lots of electrical outlets, and a/c. The size is approximately 600 sq ft.
The machines I decided to keep in Florida are best for my pet perversions: hardwoods, wood turning, wood carving, and fine box construction.
My machines are well kept and well used. I replaced most of my old machines when moving to Florida. Hence, these are for the most part all about 12 years old.
I get most of my hardwood at Alva Hardwoods here in FL. They have a huge selection of everything.
