Location: Christiansburg, Va.
Website:

I'm a native of coastal Connecticut, having moved to the Appalachian area of Virginia in '89.
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to wood, but I have a BFA in Fine Art from UConn, as well as a nearly completed MFA in Fine art from Radford U.
I majored in painting and minored in printmaking, and I also love tile making and painting/fusing glass. I'm learning woodcarving, and my hope is to bring all these elements together with woodworking to make unique pieces.
I have a love affiar with texture. I bring home far too many orphaned rocks, driftwood, leaves, and whatever else grabs my eye. Fortunately, my best friend is exactly the same, and we enable each other as best we can - lol.
I look forward to learning from all the wonderfully talented people here...

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.

God Bless
tom

Thanks, everyone! I’m really enjoying it here, I’ve learned quite a bit already. This has to be the friendliest site I’ve been on. I have a question about the Buddies thing on the homepages. I’ve been getting emails from LJ saying I have buddies, but my homepage shows no buddies. How does this feature work? What’s it’s purpose? Thanks

Oops! Never mind – I just read the “buddies” tab at the top of the page.

haha- thanks! Her name is Taz. As in Tazmanian Devil. Taz the Spaz I call her sometimes. Really she looks perfectly normal, except when a tassel can be found. She was my first cat (I have her & another) and she came to me because someone I know found her thrown into a dumpster. Where I live, we don’t have trash pickup. You just drive to a big metal dumpster and throw your trash in. He heard the kitten crying inside and fished her out. Imagine tossing a live animal in like that? The big dump trucks just pull up to them, empty them & crush it all. She would have been crushed alive. Anyhow, she was about 4 – 5 weeks old when I got her. Her eyes were still blue. For about a year she was a wild, spitting, hissing feral cat. Now she’s a cuddle doll. My vet said a solid red tabby female is rare, only 15% of solid red tabbies are female. She’s wicked smart. I got her a companion the same age at a no kill shelter that’s solid black. A round, cobby thing with big moony eyes, named Zazu. I live in a place where outdoor animals are banned, so they stay strickly inside. Healthier for them in the long run. They are both 8 years old. Long winded answer, but thanks for asking!

I’d be interested to see how your love of texture blends with wood. The craftsman’s standard is always smooth. I’ve often wanted to spend some time experimenting with “sculptural” treatments of the wooden surface.

Welcome to LJs Cindy! Bringing home orphaned rocks and leaves… boy, can I ever identify with that! Enjoy yourself here, and jump in with questions and photos of your first projects. This is a generous bunch, and many are eager to help beginners. Looking forward to seeing your work!

Hi there,
Welcome to LumberJocks… I joined the site myself just about 2 years ago and will give you fair warning, this site is VERY ADDICTIVE, VERY EDUCATIONAL, and VERY FUN…. so sit back, enjoy the ride and learn from the other LJ’s as they are a group of extremely talented people that are also very friendly…
I apologize for the late welcome but I am currently serving overseas and don’t have a lot of spare time on my hands.

Enjoy your time here on LJ and pass the word to any of your woodworking buddies about us…

Wisty
