A phone call from Santa this morning

My step-son, who is a carpenter and fine woodworker (his full time career) phoned me this morning (Christmas day). We will be seeing him this evening for dinner at another relative’s place, so he asked me on the phone if I own a jointer yet, to which I replied “no”. He said he would bring me a Delta jointer to the dinner location this evening. I couldn’t believe my ears, but he said he has the jointer sitting in his workshop and it never gets used, so he is donating it to me, under the stipulation that if he ever does need to use it I will allow him to.. otherwise it’s mine. I am also taking him some left over clear yellow cedar lumber that I had given to me a few weeks ago. I made a workbench with some of it, and also kept a few other pieces to build a veneer press, but the rest of it is taking up valuable space in my small shop. He has also given me some nice exotic hardwoods in the past, so we help each other out whenever we can. Its great to have a step-son that accepts me and also has the same interest in working with wood.

Very nice. Obviously he was taught and learned valuable lessons, that speaks volumes for you both.

Have a great holiday.

Use the jointer with care.

Hi Trev.

I see you’re into the Abbotsford experience. Do I detect a fellow fly fly guy? I’ve had my private ticket since 1963 and have logged time in Cessna 150 and 172, Piper PA 28-140 and PA 28-160, Pfiesler Storch, an old Air Force Expediter converted to tricycle gear, AT-6 Harvard, a trip or two in a glider and even 4 hours hot air balloon time. There a re others that should be on that list, but my memory isn’t what it used to be. Still need to add a chopper to the list to complete my log desires… Haven’t been at the stick in several years though, due to a couple of heart attacks that killed my medical. (sigh) These days, my stick time is going to be limited to a scale model of a DeHaviland Turbo Beaver with an eight foot span I’m building. Six channel radio control with aerleron, rudder, elevator, throttle and flaps. Might add a glider tow release or a banner tow rig at a later date. For now I just want to finish the darn thing and get it upstairs.

Nice deal on the jointer. I’m rebuilding an antique 4 1/4 inch one and would kill for that new Delta! I’m on a disability pension and money for tools is almost as hard to come by as is room to put them in. No garage at Casa Tiny, so it’s cram it in a corner of the basement in what was supposed to be a rec room and try not to trip over it while using another tool nearby.

My missus is in hospital at the moment due to complications of diabetes. Thus, I’m not into wood much right now. Too distracted to concentrate and using power tools in this state of mind is downright dangerous. I’ll wait until she’s safe at home before firing up anything that plugs in. Heck, I don’t even use the toaster these days!

I see you’ve added me to your buddy list. Consider the favor returned. Look forward to following the works of a fellow Canuck.
