Exploded view drawings in Sketchup - 4 replies
I posted this response to some comments concerning exploded view diagrams in Tom's post of his fall Sketchup challenge. Then I figured it should probably get a posting of its own. I’ll do a tutorial sometime soon. But in the meantime, just so folks know it’s not only possible but typical…. Exploded view diagrams is how I ...

Jimmy goes big - 11 replies
Thought you folks would get a kick out of this. In another forum I belong to the admin had posted some photoshopped pics of surfers with paddles saying he was seeing paddles everywhere (standup paddlesurfing is taking the surfing world by storm). I had to respond by adding my paddle to this cover and changing the headline. My apologies to Woodwo...

Great addition Martin. How do you design? By that I mean what drives you to build a particular piece. Reproduction, art, life, need, nature, profit? What kicks it off? What tools do you use? Pencil and paper, CAD, Sketchup, just start cutting?

Strength to weight ratio for woods - 13 replies
Hello All, Anyone know of a good source of information on the strength to weight ratio of woods. I’m really interested in making more paddles and would like a number of woods to choose from while still keeping them as light as possible.

Need help - Epoxy as a finish - 12 replies
Hello All, I’m building my brother a paddle and was wondering about the epoxy finish I’m using. This is my 1st time using epoxy and I could use some tips. I’ve read the West Systems manual but was wondering if we have any experts. I’ve used the 206 slow hardener for the laminations and I’m planning on using th...

I'm a Lumberjock and I'm Ok! - Reprise - 15 replies
With apologies to Monty Python. Thanks to some of our fellow lumberjocks for lyrics suggestions and encouragement. BARBER:I wanted to be… a Lumberjock! Searching from yard to yard, angering the stockers at Lowes while I pick through the junk looking for grain. The Giant Redwood. The Larch. The Fir! The mighty Scots Pine! The lofty...

Just a quick note to let folks know I haven’t put things off for no reason. ( I had hoped to get the Sketchup blog going by now, and the Bridge, or the lack thereof, has me really frustrated) but life has a funny way of interrupting sometimes. I’ve been struggling off and on for the last 4 years with a benign brain tumor. Stupid t...

Hummingbird in the garden - 13 replies
In response to a couple of requests I managed to capture one of our hummingbirds on camera. The trumpet vine is visited about every couple of minutes all day long. There is at least one nest nearby but I can’t find it. These pictures and video are of the female…the male is bright green with a red throat. (Ruby Throated) Is this c...

Other ways we might be able to help each other. - 4 replies
I had a thought as I was replying to Xavier's comment to my offbeat post. This is pretty valuable info to anyone visiting the area and since this is a tourist spot I figured I’d give it broader exposure. And then I was thinking why stop there? There has to be so many ways that the collective here could share info. For example: In my job I&...

Mystical numerology at work? - 17 replies
I just noticed that the 1st project I have completed since becoming a LumberJock is project post 1958….the year I was born. Have the planets aligned as well? Will I win the lottery or be hit by a bus? What does this mean? I’ll have to consult my Magic Eight Ball. Cool…it said no bus and yes to the lottery. You’re al...

Perplexed by my Bandsaw Riser Block - 25 replies
I just installed the 6” riser block on my bandsaw and it doesn’t seem to be the correct length. I went back over everything 3 times and the 105” blades don’t fit. Completely un-tensioned, blade just won’t go on. Wheels are co-planar….amd I missing something? I’m hoping to resaw the cedar for the summe...
