Use of Sliding Compound Mitre Saw vs. Radial Arm Saw - 12 replies
Today I was talking to a student about how to use a Sliding Compund Mitre Saw. He had been taught, as the diagrams on the machine show, to pull the saw towards him, start the saw, drop the blade, push to cut and then stop before lifting. It occurred to me that this is different to the radial arm saw where you pull to cut, despite the fact that...

Sorting forums - 4 replies
When I view Projects, they are sorted by most recently posted, and the same is true for Blogs. But forums are sorted by most recently replied to. Now I can see the merits of being able to sort forums by the most recent reply, but I would also love to have the option of sorting by most recently posted instead. You see, when I browse the proj...

The dust collection system in the workshop where I took these photos are connected not only to each of the machine tools, but also to one point on the floor. All you do is lift the flap, turn on the dust collector and sweep. When you’re done, put the flap back down a...

Interesting TV Program Down Under - 4 replies
I saw an interesting program on Australian TV last night. It’s part of a British series called Mastercrafts with this episode being about green woodcraft – i.e. making items from wood that has not been milled and dried. It is a little long (1 hour), but it is available for viewing online. If you have the time, you may enjoy watching.

Converting pdf files to jpg files - 5 replies
I like diagrams. So with blogs and replies to forum questions, I sometimes like to draw a quick diagram in Google Sketchup. The trouble is that I need to get a file in jpg format in order to post it. Now I have installed on my computer (free) software that allows me to print to pdf format, but not to jpg format. Up to now, I’ve obtai...
