A little anarchy might be good for the soul

A little anarchy might be good for the soul

Christopher Schwarz’s The Anarchists Tool Chest sounded, based on some reviews, to be a bit of a mixed bag. Many folks have compared it to other works, to varying degrees. My honest impression is that there really isn’t a book out there for the hand tool crowd. Schwarz’s work is a default go-to manual for the neophyte hand tool user, whether they’re new to woodworking or just new to hand tools. The first question anyone asks is “what do I need?” Inva...

Worth Every Penny

Worth Every Penny

I gotta have my music. In fact, for some reason I concentrate better when I have music going than when I don’t. However, with the scream of power tools, it can get lost. Not only that, but something has to help pass the time when sanding! Well, the Work Tune does the job just fine. I picked this one up for $50 from Lowe’s with some Christmas money, and I’m thrilled with it. First the hearing protection: It works great. I can hear the scream of the machines, but n...

More Than Worth the Money

More Than Worth the Money

While wandering through Lowe’s, I saw this bad boy just sitting there with a $30 price tag. Since I found myself in no position to own a table saw for the foreseeable future, it looked like it would solve one of my biggest problems: how to rip boards down. The Accu-Rip attaches to your circular saw with two small screws located at the front of the guide. It takes a bit of time to get it set right, because it’s edge must line up with the blade just so, but once it does, it wo...

Even in a bad saw, it makes great cuts

Even in a bad saw, it makes great cuts

When I first used my POS Firestorm circular saw, I had problems with it binding up during rips. Well, I blamed the blade and went to Lowe’s for a replacement. I came across the Freud Avanti blade. Since I didn’t want to switch out blades for different functions, I went for a good combination blade. The blade I picked up isn’t the one in the picture (courtesy of the internet), as mine is a 40T combination blade, but the important thing is the cut. The Avanti blade was ...

Surprisingly Good

Surprisingly Good

Black & Decker tools suck. That’s the general consensus from woodworkers the world over. After my Firestorm circular saw couldn’t rip a piece of 4/4 pine, I tend to agree. However, the Workmate is the exception. This sweet little puppy is just the ticket for a new woodworker. In one little package, you get a workbench, a vise, and even saw horses. It’s fairly easy to assemble, but the instructions could be better. In an effort to put as few steps as possible on ...

Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use...everything it's cracked up to be

Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use...everything it's cracked up to be

When I first looked at this book, it was being touted at the end-all, be-all book of workbenches. Now, in all honesty, I don’t know about that. However, I do know that it is one of the most essential books out there for designing a workbench. Schwarz details what he feels are the essential requirements for a workbench based on the type of work one does. For example, a power tool only woodworker can get away with an old door on a couple of saw horses. But for those of us who use h...
