hand cut mortise help - 6 replies
I’ve been trying to build a hope chest for a while that has at least 15 mortise and tenon joints. I have a problem though. I’ve got quite a few of the mortises cut, but sometimes when chiseling the mortise it seems to want to break the wood or crack it. It is 4/4 thick cherry using a 1/4” chisel making a 7/16” mortise. Is...

I have some cheaper ones from HF and they work fine for smaller projects, but what about bigger projects. What do you use, what brand, and what pros/cons do your clamps have? I have those black and orange bar clamps from HF. Like I said, th...

What kind of wood? - 2 replies
I picked up a pallet the other day and cut it all apart. I thought it was pine, but now I’m not 100% sure. When I cut it, it didn’t have that pine smell. I also spotted a big chunk of red on one of the sides (I believe the side that faced down). Anyone have any clue what it might be?Thanks.

I have a 2×2 coffee table leg that will have a 3/4” piece attached via mortise and tenon. Question is, how deep/big should the tenon be going into the leg? For instance should it be 1/2” thick by 1” long. Thanks for the help.

How to join a butt joint - 10 replies
I’m doing an actual project finally that I’m trying to keep clean looking, cheap, and strong. I had some red oak that I planned down to 5/8” thick (wood was cupped). I am wondering what the best approach would be to join a butt joint where the plans show pocket holes being used. I do not have a pocket hole jig. Can you use dowe...

I’m very interested in building a bread box that has a rolled front door/opening. How do all the strips of wood stay connected so that it doesn’t leave gaps when you open or close the door? Thanks in advance.
