Being a firefighter I think of all the safety factors that happen in a shop(well maybe not really, only fire things). We use wood and metal and tools of all sorts. Everyone uses rags and sometimes use those rags for varnishes or if your really handy, cleaning up after changing your cars oil. Well guess what…. IT’S FIRE PREVENTION WEEK!!!! Please be mindful of what goes on in your shop. A fire extinguisher is always handy in a shop. I can’t remember who it was, but someone was using a lathe the other day and a piece smolder and almost landed in the sawdust (I think that’s how it went). Could you imagine how bad that could be? You would lose all your tools, even some of the valuable ones (like vintage hand planes). Dealing with the rags, they can flame up just sitting in a pile so have those in a safe place (fire bin) and all flamable products in a fire rated cabinet. Any way, hope everyone stays safe, gets an extinguisher, and always has a good time in the shop.

Thanks Tim; it never hurts to remember to be safe and think about all the hazards that may occur in the shop.

Always a good reminder my friend.
Thank you.
I’m going to inspect the shop today and see if anything needs improving, and check my fire extinguisher to see if it is still OK, and handy to get at in case I need it.
Thank you again.

So I guess smoking and drinking is out too!!! :~)

That’s good advice Tim. As a child about 5 – 6 years old, I remember my dad was resurfacing hardwood floors. He had set some rags in a pile on the floor and they began to smolder. I remember getting my dad and showing him the smoking rags. Could have been a bad day for certain. Nearly 50 years later the details are foggy, but I’m not aware of any open flames, sparks or anything that would have caused it. I think the ceiling light was on – that’s all. Could have been spontaneous combustion.

@hjt -Yeah, I’d say smoking is out of the question too. Drinking on the other hand… I know lots of guys have their own fridge in the shop so I’ll stay away from that. Glad to hear nothing worse happened with the smoldering rags.
