I signed up with Lumberjocks less than a week ago after following a link to a very cool video review of the Incra Miter Express by Tom (mot). It had just the information I was looking for and was really well done. (Thanks, Tom!) I thought Lumberjocks was probably worth checking out more later. But the work week kicked in and pulled me under and I forgot all about the site.
Tonight I checked my email and saw notices that I was getting comments on my Lumberjocks profile. I wasn’t even sure what that meant exactly, and was actually a bit alarmed. I thought I’d better sign in and check the situation out. Waiting for me were 9 “welcome” messages from guys across the country, including one from my home state and another from a fellow who lives about 5 miles from my childhood home.
I’ve been a lurker on a couple of other sites for a long time, but never felt comfortable posting—partly because I’m such a beginner at woodworking and partly because I didn’t want to go through the “outsider trying to break into a new social group” ordeal. This was the first site I’ve ever been to where folks came out to meet me. If such friendliness is standard operating procedure, I’m definitely impressed, and looking forward to getting to know the folks here. I hope you’re tolerant of dumb questions, because I’ve got a bunch of them.

Welcome Chris…brush off the saw dust and join in. We look forward to your input, cause here it is not about skill, but about heart. Which is what I think working wood is all about.

Glad you found LJ’s! These guys (and gals) are great. I’m a newbie too and haven’t felt so welcome on any other forum, woodworking or any other subject!

Hello Chris! I’m not going to hold the Clemson thing against you! I graduated a South Carolina fighting chicken! Still living in Columbia. Glad another South Carolina woodworker is on the site. There are a couple of us here in Columbia that reguarly post. I’m far from a pro as well. I got hooked on the site by asking my own dumb questions. Instant feedback. I’m not sure what you all have in Greenville, but there are some decent woodworking suppliers here in Columbia. Check out Woodzone.com. They have a store here. Also, Mann Tool and Supply has a Rocker Outlet within it. Look forward to seeing your work.

Hi Chris, as the others have said Welcome! Like you, I was impressed when I first joined (and still am) with the wealth of know how and helpfulness I have encountered on LJ. I have never failed to get the answer to a question I have posted. I was amazed at the amount of space given for our passions. I don’t post that often, but when I do I know I will be welcomed with a smile and fresh cup of cyber coffee.
Take your shoes off,
Stay a while.
Later,
Doug in AZ.

Hey TigerPaw…..... couldn’t agree with you more LJ’s has a different feel. And as far as being a beginner, heck there are so many disciplines of woodworking, seems we’re all beginners at differing points along “The Craftmans Path” (Mark Mazzo).
I used that same video that you mentioned on the Incra mitre guage. Good stuff around in people and content.

TigerPaw. From one of the old timers. When I signed up there were very few people about 25 or so and some of them may have been lurkers., But a few of us would give one another a good/bad time. We had lots of fun and no one to bother us.
The wood projects started flowing. The blogs came along and all of a sudden we became known by a few more people. But we’ve still kept that front porch feel. Come in and sit down a while and when you want to share we are all willing to listen.

Warning…...This site is addictive !!
I also have not been here that long. It is the most welcoming site that I have ever belonged to. And the knowledge here is outstanding…...One can’t help but learn…..You will love this site, but it will also cost you time in the shop….but it’s a good trade off.
Welcome

MABUHAY!
That’s a welcome greeting from the Philippines. And I received that greeting from WayneC when I joined. You’ll love it here.
