« Part 4: Trash Can Planer Chip Collector Part 5 of Dust Collection series no next part

I hate having to maneuver around the shop to turn on my dust collectors. A lot of times I don’t remember until I have the cut all lined up and ready to go. I hope this small modification will make things a little more convenient.
In the post-Christmas clearance, I found a set of Christmas light remote switches. I checked them out and they were rated for 120v and 15A, so I decided to try them out on my equipment. They were around $7, so it wasn’t a big gamble.
I like how it turned out. I keep the remote on my table saw fence and it is a lot easier to turn on my dust collector and shop vac now as opposed to getting to the equipment and manually turning it on.
Enjoy!

Funny, I found the same setup and used it for one of my vacs as well. They work great.

I will have to guess those switches are only rated for a 15A resistive load, not an inductive load like a dust collector motor. You may find down the road that the contacts inside will weld themselves shut and you won’t be able to turn it off. Not a huge deal on a dust collector, and especially not at $7 a pop.

I agree, they may not last, but I only need them to last until next Christmas, when I will find them again on 50% clearance!

Bob, I assume you are talking about my dust collector? It is Harbor Freight. If you read my previous blog entries and watch the videos, you will see how I set it up.

Whoops! Well I got it from Walmart on clearance after Christmas. It was in the Christmas lights section, but I don’t know the brand. I’m sure you can find something on Amazon if you search for a remote switch. Hope that helps!
