Building the skeleton.

Going to attempt to build a cnc router just for hobby stuff and maybe help with decking out our barn conversion.

Not really that good at woodworking but I think it will be fun to try and you never know it might come out decent. :)

Started out scoring some 9 ply 3/4 inch birch plywood from our local home center and cut into pieces to build the bed.

It looks like you underestimate your woodworking skills. Here is a little advice you may find helpful. I'm building a CNC router with a 36"x84" work surface. The woodwork is complete, but one must remember, a CNC machine is a precision tool and needs to respond to very precise movements. That means all moving parts need to be "right on", without any slop or backlash. Achieving precision using wood is very difficult. On my CNC build, I had to incorporate many metal parts I had to machine in order to get acceptable results. Woodworking alone won't build a working CNC machine. One other thing I have to report is; the electronics and software accounts for 75% of the total cost to build. My CNC is 90% complete, but I am faced with about $1000 to complete plus learning how to operate it. I started out blindly trying to build on the cheap. It's costing me much more than I bargained for. I don't want to discourage you, rather I would like to encourage you, as long as you know that this project will cost more than you realize. First off, assuming you have the computer, you will need a CAD program to draw what you wish to make. Second you will need a CAM program to convert the drawing into machine code and finally you will need a program that takes the machine code and translates it into CNC control. I've spent over 2 years building my machine and have worked out most of the build issues. I've re-invented such things as anti-backlash devices in order to keep the cost as low as possible. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, problems or concerns.

MrRon, Good advice for sure!! Have the computer, Mach3, high end Cad program but will need a good cam program to write my G code. Did better than a 100 hours of research before I even started but there will always be issues to deal with and you can count on me pickin your brain now and then before this project is over.

Pricing everything out, steppers (Nema 23) and controller package, acme rods, bearings, fittings and brackets, limit switches, hardware, etc etc was about 1,500 so add another 500 and it might do it lol Not a cheap date is it?

Thinking seriously about buying the z axis unit made from aluminum and a complete unit. $150 delivered to my door minus the stepper, nut etc.

Thanks for the advice!! would love to see your machine in operation. :)

Cheers, - Jeff

I admire you for taking on the task of building a CNC from scratch. About 1 1/2 years ago I was looking to do the same but about the time I started looking into the actual build process I came across an older all aluminum machine on Craigs list that need the electronics and programing upgraded. Needless to say I snapped it up and spent the next couple of months working on the upgrade and learning the CAD/Cam programs.

I found CNC Zone web site very helpful.

I agree with MrRon you underestimate your woodworking skills.

Good luck, I will watch out for your updates and progress.

Thanks Chippewafalls, you are just about strait west of me about 3 hours. Take it you received a little bit of that white stuff today.

Nice score on your machine, I have been checking CL for quite some time with no luck or they think its made of gold. :(

I am a member of the zone but its seems to be way too big, feel like a speck of dust in the sawdust pile there, ask a simple straightforward question and you get a dozen different answers, by the time you are finished you feel more confused then when you first posted and many look down on you…. like whats this pile of junk you building. I have learned a few things from there tho. Great info in the sticky's :)

Cad should be a breeze, I have several that I use weekly. Cam is a different story, have been watching how to vids and doesn't look to difficult at an entry level, we all get better with practice. Lot of free G code out there.

Thanks for stopping by and the post!!

Working on table and rails

Update:

After squaring the frame up I locked the table box into place with an additional 8 inch band of 3/4 inch plywood on top of the birch plywood, gluing and screwing it way more than necessary. You will find that everything on this build will be overkill but movement is not an option. :0

Large Pic

Wood Shelving Rectangle Hardwood Flooring

Choose to 45 the plywood for the rails and epoxy the aluminum channel instead of just laying it horizontal with one edge up and one down. felt there was more surface area.

Once the epoxy set the excess aluminum was planed off with a thickness planer.

Large Pic

Wood Gas Flooring Tool Metalworking hand tool

Large Pic

Bottle Wood Office ruler Ruler Tape measure

Created a channel in the bottom of the box for dust collection. will drill a 4 inch hole in the bottom and mount and flanged gate valve.

Large Pic

Rectangle Wood Font Wood stain Hardwood

Rough framing on the table almost done, just the top to complete with dust collection holes all the way around.

Large Pic

Wood Rectangle Hardwood Flooring Wood stain

Top of the table getting the holes cut. sure would be nice to have a cnc router to do this. :)

Large Pic

Wood Rectangle Flooring Floor Road surface

Finished the duct holes, glued and screwed down plus added 1Ă—2's the the main supports to flush em up with the oak plywood banding and leaving a channel to run wires for stepper motors limit swithes and lights in the top.

Working on the Y rails and gantry. :)

Time to get back at er.

I decided just for cosmetics to paint the dust collection holes before the formica went down, had the paint wouldn't of made a special trip to town for it. lol

Testing the rails and roller bearing for clearance and mounting option.

Large Pic

Large Pic

Came up with a box idea to fit between the main posts, gives me the option to move the rails up and down, in and out and tilt, once everything is set 4 - 4 inch heavy torx washer head screws on both ends of the box should hold everything in place quite nicely and can easily be readjusted if necessary.

Large pic

Large Pic

Wood Floor Wood stain Hardwood Plank

Added a couple oak pieces just above and below the roller bearings. just didn't like the way it looked with the open bearing, lol form and function. :)

Large Pic

Wood Building Fixture Wood stain Hardwood

Extremely happy right now, built the two bearing support boards for the gantry and clamped a board across the top to see how it would roll and I think I need to give myself a pat on the back. lol that thing rolls so smooth its unbelievable with no slop that I can tell whatsoever. Can you tell I'm smiling. :)

Large Pic

Wood Floor Flooring Hardwood Wood stain

Here is a close up of the bottom gantry support with the bearings, Drilled holes in the bottom and tapped for a standard 3/8th inch thread. the hole goes all the way in the bearing bolt hole which is slotted up and down an extra 5/16 inch.
A 5/16Ă—1-1/2 inch spring was loaded into the hole before the bolt threaded in, this is not to hold constant pressure on the bearing but to give all the bearing equal pressure before tightening, plus if the track ever wears a quick loosen and retighten of the nuts and all slop will be removed.

Large Pic

Wood Wood stain Hardwood Tints and shades Beam

And just a couple of quick shots of both ends. Can't wait to start constructing the gantry for real. :)

Mama thinks I should be spending more time building her kitchen and less time on the CNC. Hmmmm BOOOO. lol Just kidding she is worth it.

My next entry might take a little longer unless I burn more midnight oil. :0

Hey thanks for stopping by and having a look! Suggestion, comments and questions are welcome

Cheers - Jeff

P. S. I'm really having fun with this!!

Edit:

A Pic to help answer a question. :)

As the aluminum track wear's, the roller bearings will need to be adjusted.
As I tried to explain in pic 20 but didn't do a very good job :( the bottom bearing bolt hole is slotted for up and down movement, a bolt and spring are inserted from the bottom to add a fair amount of pressure to seat the bottom bearing to the track, then the bearing nut is tightened.

When the track starts to wear a quick loosen of the bearing nut and the spring will push the bearing tight up against the track again and then just re-tighten the bearing bolt again.

Hope that makes sense. lol

Trying to keep the tolerances to minimum, only about a 1/16" between the gantry carrier and the guild rail.

O man, I like this blog. You are using V bearings, and have to use a lot and they are not cheap. Can you mention also the cost in your blog?

Gantry parts and pieces

Greetings fellow woodworkers. :)

Haven't had a lot of time to work on the project but while mama was away I snuck in making a few parts and pieces of the gantry.
Designed so at anytime I can split the gantry and replace the roller tracks or upgrade to steel if the aluminum doesn't hold up.

First few shots are just some fabrication in progress. Using cabinet conectors for assembly, auction buys a few years back; thought it was time to but em to good use.

Large Pic

There will be 2 of these dog bone looking caps banded with oak and laminated with formica on both sides; they cap the gantry both top and bottom along with supporting the Y axis stepper.

The blocks being glued are the fastening blocks for the gantry support ends.

Main 4 pieces to the gantry.

The 2 pieces of plywood on the inside tie the 2 sides together, the finger holes are so I can pull em into place.

Large Pic

With 20 guild pins per side; perfect alignment is almost guaranteed and the screw fit nicely.

Large Pic

These fastener are quite nice, max open 1-3/4; screwed tight 1-1/4

Kina how it will fit.

Temp fit on the gantry to make adjustments but it didn't need any. :) Really rolls smooth! WooHoo

Indeed not bad. You may say very good. Sturdy made. I hope there will be no friction between left and right, but when you are writting smooth rolling it is oke.

Finishing up the Gantry

Guess I must have been a good boy working on the wife's circle kitchen because she actually helped me with this project for an hour or so. WooHoo

Here are just a few shoots of finishing up the gantry, there are rails on both sides of the gantry to accommodate a wrap around z axis guild, didn't really like the thought of all that weight just hanging off the front side.

This would be a lot easier if I had better idea of how to. but still having fun. :)

Here is the 3 main pieces that make up one side of the gantry.

Drilling out the rails for cabinet connectors for fastening to the gantry, marked them out and my wife drilled the prep holes on the drill press.

Up front the 3 main pieces that make up one side of the gantry, 1/4 inch spacer to add clearance for the roller bearing nut, the rail which is upside down showing the connectors, and one half of the gantry. In the back ground is the other half already assembled. The brown formica in the middle is just a spacer, I only have one sheet of the lighter colored formica and still have the z axis to laminate.

Cheers!

Have 2 full tables like this one, this outta be fun! hoping the gremlins will have it done by morning. lol Standard wiring diagram doesn't apply here!

Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.
Found a few minutes to get the board started, controllers first, air will blow under the fins to help with cooling and wires go through the face and will be routed on the back side. Shaping up to be a nice clean looking board when finished, :)

CNC Command and Control Center

Well it's time to start the Control and Command Center. :)

Drew up a few sketches, pretty rough tho, not much of a drawer or carpenter as you can see; but I fun trying!

Started out with a full 1-3/4 solid plywood base, laminated top and oak border that will have some inset decor later.
the component/monitors will mechanically rise via threaded rod from the back side, pics should tell the story.
