There’s a new Little Good Pieces blog post: “Scrub Plane on the Cheap”. Read about how I converted a beater No. 4 to a scrub plane:

I was intrigued to see this Robert as I’ve been thinking of doing the same thing. I have a couple of old No.4s and I already own a LN 4 1/2 smoother, so I will definitely repurpose one of the No.4s into a scrub plane.
Now if I could only figure out a way to stretch the other No.4 into a No.8, I’d be sorted.

Hmm…I had a carpenter send me after a “board stretcher” once, maybe they have one for planes???

Any adjustable mouth can be a scrub or fore plane, just open ‘er up, camber the blade, plane away!
I find off brand #5’s all day long at antique stores, they work great as scrubs and I find them for $12-15 all the time.
