Cutting Board to be turned into a table

The plan is to turn this cutting board into a full size table. Nearly 7’ long, 30” wide and 1.75” thick. Just working out the details on a functional base at this time. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Custom Big Green Egg Double Table from Cypress

I built this custom Big Green Egg table for a customer. Made completely of Cypress. I used a combination of pocket screws, dowels, mortise and tenon joints along with glue. He now has a great grilling station and tornado shelter.

A polished black granite plate is inset on the top for hot pans or a burner. The two drop leaf tables make for some serious prep space. Finished with Watco Teak Oil.

We loaded up his (2) Large Big Green Egg ceramic grills.

I am being invited to the next BBQ!

Open Weave Cutting Board Inspired by Lumber Jockers Just like YOU!

It was an extreme exercise in Patience and Precision. The glue up was loads of fun…and incredibly nerve wracking! Any gaps would have rendered a pricey cutting board into a heavy serving tray. But, I managed to prevail and serve up two beautiful boards that are now making two lucky moms very happy after this past Mother’s Day.

End Grain Cutting Board with a New Found Perspective of only Dark Wood

So I had a customer order a board with only Jatoba and Walnut, I happily said sure thing while I thought to myself how dark and boring that would be. I was so worried about it at the time I had to make an extra board with lots of Rock Maple bits in it to feel better about the whole thing. Wow was I wrong! It came out great in the end and I expect to make a handful in the near future.

Also tried out a Beeswax finish instead of Salad Bowl. It smells a whole lot better and really makes them shine.

Thanks for looking and your comments and constructive criticism are always welcomed.

Thanks to sPalm, DeGoose and countless others who share these great ideas and inspire me to continue to learn and grow as a woodworker. I have spent so much time with End Grain that it was fun to not have to sand so much and work on my finishing skills with face grain. It was a completely different animal.

The boards are all made up of Walnut, Jatoba and Rock Maple.

Salad Bowl Finish

I forget who originally made the swiss cheese board but it’s definitely a family favorite in my home.

Cutting Board Christmas Gifts (The Real First Round)

Here is the real first round of boards that went out to family for Christmas. Credit The Wood Whisperer for getting me started, and Lumber Jocks for really providing me with the inspiration to just dive head first into serious woodworking. All of your ideas, concepts, tips, reviews and projects are constantly providing me with inspiration and sawdust.

Thank You

The woods are Rock Maple – Walnut – Purple Heart

Purple Heart in my area is tough to come by outside of 3/4” and that’s the overpriced pre-dimensioned stuff at Rockler…So I don’t think there are a lot of projects in my future that are going to include it unless I get a special order.

Pottery Barn Rip Off Changing Table/Storage

So my wife was looking through the Pottery Barn catalog and noticed a changing table/storage unit that would work for our living room. It cost roughly $1,500. So of course I jumped in and said, “I can make that1”

It was a great way to test out my new Dado blades, table saw sled and router table. The main unit is made of Birch Ply with Poplar trim at the base and mitered/shaped Poplar top. We painted it Sherwin Williams Pure White to match the trim in our home, and animal baskets are from Target. All in all it cost about $150 to make, much better than the $1,500 the fancy pants store wanted.

It was a lot of fun to make and all of the other mommies on the street think I’m the best dad/husband around.

I learned a lot about working with hardwoods and end grain, especially the sanding part.
