Excellent Lathe Fixture

Excellent Lathe Fixture

I love my lathe … but I hate the built-in indexing system! Enter the Alisam Engineering Indexing System ( http://alisam.com/page/14g9e/Woodworking_turning_OT.html ) Here is what the manufacturer says about it: The system consists of a 10 inch, extensively laser engraved with index lines every 5 degrees and degree marks every 15 degrees, anodized aluminum plate with the appropriate ID for your spindle, with three concentric rows of indexing holes. There are three rows of indexing h...

Laguna 2hp Cyclone Dust Collector - Unboxing & Assy

Laguna 2hp Cyclone Dust Collector - Unboxing & Assy

11-01-2015 02:16 AM by TheDane | 7 comments »

This is an initial (unboxing & assembly) review … I’ll update after the machine has been in service for a few months. The machine arrived at the local Woodcraft store on a pallet, and weighed in at 106 KG (a little over 233 pounds). We got the shipping container ( 45” x 26” x 38”) to fit into the cargo bay of my Jeep Liberty with a little finagling (and a few well-chosen words). I have a pneumatic table and a very patient wife that were invaluable in unloading it in my g...

FastCap Gave Me The Finger ...

FastCap Gave Me The Finger ...

01-31-2015 12:19 AM by TheDane | 35 comments »

... and I like it! A few weeks ago, I responded to a promotional email from FastCap and they sent me their new ’11th Finger’ for free. Some people here on LJ’s scoffed at it, but I actually kind of like it. It stands within easy reach on my saw’s fence or the table, and works as well as any other push stick I have ever used. There is one downside … the two rare-earth magnets in the base are just friction fit and can come out if you mistakenly lay the ...

Tools have never been so sharp!

Tools have never been so sharp!

01-30-2014 11:33 PM by TheDane | 23 comments »

Like a lot of turners, I have always been in search of a way to get my tools sharper. I have been looking at CBN wheels for quite some time, but the cost was prohibitive. A clumsy shop accident that resulted in a chipped friable wheel on my slow-speed grinder was the push I needed to do something. Chipped or cracked wheels are dangerous and are an accident waiting to happen. A friend mentioned an email he had received advertising a pair of wheels for $249, so I logged onto http://www.wo...

Dust Collection Upgrade

Dust Collection Upgrade

02-05-2013 07:12 PM by TheDane | 20 comments »

I have wanted a two-stage dust collection system for some time, so decided to take the leap and order an Oneida Super Dust Deputy. The Super Dust Deputy (SDD) was well packed and everything (SDD, installation bolts, foam gasket, and the 5”-to-4” and 6”-to-4” reducers) was packed in a single box surrounded by plastic and foam. Because of the lid I opted for, I substituted the bolts Oneida provided with 1/4” x 20 tpi x 2 1/2” that I had on hand in the shop...

Inexpensive Remote

Inexpensive Remote

09-23-2012 02:24 AM by TheDane | 22 comments »

After repeated problems with the remote control on my dust collector, I hit on a less costly and (so far) more reliable solution. One day I was walking through the electrical department at the local big box and saw these … they sell for $11.99. For that, you get the wireless switch that plugs into the service outlet like a wall wart and a remote control that can manage three of these devices. I bought 3 of them … use one on my air cleaner, one on my dust collector, and one o...

MasterForce 12" Drill Press

MasterForce 12" Drill Press

12-09-2011 07:16 PM by TheDane | 18 comments »

Full disclosure first: I have always been a little leery of private label brands (like the ‘MasterForce’ label at Menards). I know these are Asian knock-offs, and the quality may not measure up to the major tool brands. That being said, the need for a drill press with a longer quill travel and the sale price at Menards ($179.00) combined to tip the scale and I made the purchase last week. I had a bunch of pen blanks to drill for a Freedom Pens project, and doing them with my...

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System

Versatile, Affordable Sharpening System

08-29-2011 06:25 PM by TheDane | 22 comments »

I’m new to turning, and it didn’t take long to figure out I needed a way to sharpen tools. I picked up a slow-speed (1725 rpm) grinder when Woodcraft had them on sale a few weeks ago. I’ve been watching YouTube videos posted by Eddie Castelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdchP8ZYUCc), and decided to try a sharpening system he builds … the Blawkhawk Sharpening System. It sells for a fraction of the price of other systems, and delivers excellent results. With...

Great Sanding and Finishing Pad

Great Sanding and Finishing Pad

07-20-2011 09:32 PM by TheDane | 13 comments »

I had been looking for a better solution for ‘scuffing’ project parts between finishing coats. Though sandpaper was an obvious choice, I seemed to be going through quite a bit and was leaving a lot of scratches between coats. #0000 steel wool works pretty well, but it is messy and (supposedly) doesn’t play well with water-based finishes. Enter Rhynosoft Pads (thanks to Charles Neil for the tip!). These are terrific. The pads are a good size (4-1/2” X 5-1/2”...

Outstanding Low-Profile JigSaw

Outstanding Low-Profile JigSaw

07-18-2011 09:13 PM by TheDane | 5 comments »

Both of my 20+ year old jigsaws bit the dust, so I trundled off to Menards to scope out a replacement. I spotted this saw on sale ($84.95 … Rockwell’s MSRP is $149.99). Nobody on LJ’s had any experience with this saw ( http://lumberjocks.com/topics/27668 ), so I decided to take the leap (Menards has a pretty good return policy). I had about $80 in rebate coupons, so it was an easy purchase. Full disclosure: I have always hated jigsaws (hard to control, hard to get straigh...
