197 days ago by degoose | 17 comments »

This is just a little tip.. not the whole tutorial of how to cut and make a woven board.Basically you all can make the weave with the two accent stripes on each side.. right.[ ok just a length of the main timber with 2 stripes cut 1/16 or 1/8 ” thick and glued up. see the pics and work it out ]You can also make the background pieces from the other of the accent timbers the same width as the main weave less the accents.. ok so far.. so I don’t need to go though all that do I? Handcrafted Wooden Rings

209 days ago by FrankLad | 25 comments »

I received a couple of comments with regards to how I build the wooden rings in my gallery, so I thought this would be a good place to share a bit about my process. This will not be the best-worded blog entry. I’ll just kinda let my mind spill… My very first rings were done in the bentwood style, which involves some trial-and-error, custom jigs, a great amount of patience and an even greater amount of time to achieve the contrast similar to the rings done in the layered sty...

Curved Panels - adding another dimension to woodworking. #5: Putting it all together - a simple curved door.

266 days ago by John8059 | 2 comments »

Now that the panel is made (in this case 2 layers of 1/8” bender), it needs to be covered with the appropriate wood. In this case it is cherry and I didn’t have any veneer wide enough to span the panel, so I had to bookmatch two sheets. You need to have a special tape to hold the panels together through the glue-up process. You also need to have a special cold press glue to bond the veneer to the curved panels. You can get both at Joe Woodworker. BTW – He has a new pr...

Tips for installing inlay

302 days ago by John8059 | 7 comments »

Since it is a little too chilly to work in my shop today, I’ll do a little virtual woodworking to get my weekend fix. I am working on a coffee table with a complicated veneer pattern and inlay banding. Below is the actual top veneer taped and almost ready to glue to the substrate.Since you only get one shot at cutting the grooves for the inlay, I spent a lot of time planning! One thing that concerned me was that I cound not use the flat edge of my router base everywhere so I had to r...

Lattice Cutting board Help

810 days ago by Tony | 16 comments »

After several e-mails requesting the plans for the Dan Walters cutting board I copied I decided to put some information together to get people started. The first thing to decide is what size of board you want as this will dictate the stock you need. Or the stock you have will dictate what size cutting board you can make. Stock selection: you need to have a good contrast between the different woods used. The wood selected should also be hard woods, but not necessarily too hard. OAK, ...

A veneering extravaganza!

594 days ago by John Fry | 29 comments »

This intricate project is a veneered, inlaid, banded, and beaded set consisting of a coffee table and two end tables. The visible woods are curly maple, boire, Peruvian walnut, anigre, figured anigre, and wenge. The secondary woods are mahogany and poplar. This elevated shot shows the anigre veneered drawer bottom, and the detail in the top. The end tables are 23” tall and the tops are just under 26” X 26”. All three tables are finished with five coats of an oi...

A Krenov Inspired Cabinet on Stand in Six Days (pix)

512 days ago by John Fry | 18 comments »

A veneered curly koa, James Krenov style cabinet on a sculpted, curved leg, stand. The doors are bookmatched with a strip of sapwood down the middle. The turned Gaboon ebony handles accent the koa’s colors. This was a joint project with expert woodworker and friend, Jack Hutchison from Houston TX. and it was built in six days. But first I want to thank everyone who visited and responded to my last blog; A very large walnut and walnut burl credenza I’ve admired Jack’...

A Hepplewhite style Federal game table in six days, PIX.

438 days ago by John Fry | 13 comments »

A while back I posted a project that I did in my shop in California with my woodworking friend Jack Hutchison from Houston, TX. Here is that post: A Krenov Inspired Cabinet on Stand in Six Days We completed that cabinet during a six day visit by Jack. Our agreement was that at some future date, I would go to Houston and we’d do another six day project in his shop. So….I arrived at Jack’s and we completed a much more complicated piece in another six day time frame and here it is………....

A small table that took a whole lot of work

599 days ago by John Fry | 35 comments »

This is my first blog entry ever. :-) So I hope I do it right. This is a photo essay of the construction of a couple of “Drum Tables”. A drum table made of Indonesian rosewood and wenge. A second table of Asian ebony and wenge was made at the same time. They have a 21” diameter at the top, and stand 23” tall. The main cylinder has an 18” outside diameter. The curved side panels are all bent laminations, and veneered with the final wood choice. The curve...
