What kind of clamps do I need? - 16 replies

As the title says, I need clamps. I have some small Irwin clamps and one that’s a little bigger – IIRC ~ 8 inches. At first I won’t need to big as I plan on doing small boxes (no bigger than 30” in the longest direction). I’m surprised at the number of kinds of clamps available. So any suggestions on what I need?...

Measuring Dove Tails Angles - 9 replies

What tools help the most with setting angles on dovetails with hand tools. I’ve seen on Roy Underhill that the traditional method is a square and bevel gauge. On Lie Nielsen that have a little gauge that looks really good. Any other things out there that help set the angles on them?

Miter + Bench hook for Japanese Saws - 2 replies

So it was recommended to me that a set of bench hooks would help me do a lot of things with my current garage works workbench. I read in “Made by Hand” that moving the Miter board to the far side would make it more usable with a Japanese pull saw (which I what I’ve ordered). Are there any more ‘mods’ to a bench an...

Chiselin' with shaky hands - 4 replies

I’m starting to get into woodworking and in particular hand tool woodworking. I’ve got one concern. Chisels. I (apparently) have fibromyalgia—another gift of my PTSD. Part of that is numbness and weakness in the hands (sometimes acute). Are there any techniques or tools that would help me with doing paring or mallet work? ...

To sat it another way, what are wood commonly used for different projects (furniture, decorative, utilitarian boxes, etc) that there is something similar here to use to recreate?

Help Choosing Joinery for First Project - 19 replies

First woodworking project period and I plan to do a utilitarian piece – a box for my old Torque wrench. From the advice given me on another thread, I think I’m going to use poplar. My next decision is how to join it up. I thought about doing dovetails but I’m not sure that isn’t too much of a leap for my first project....

Wood for first project - a small box - 5 replies

I’m going to start on my first woodworking project soon. I plan on using hand tools (that I’m about to buy). The project is a storage box for 20” x 30” tissue paper I use in model building. I’m going to dovetail the corners and haven’t decided on the top and bottom. What wood would be a good choice? Rat...

New Woodworker - Japanese or Western - 12 replies

Hello – first post. I’m just about to start woodworking in earnest. For various reasons, I want to start with primarily hand tools. My experience is watching Roy Underhill on and off for several years along with various other shows like it. My only real experience in pulling a saw in anger is shorting dowel rods for the closet ...
