What is this "hook" shaped chisel? - 13 replies

I got this small hook shaped chisel bundled with a bunch of turning chisels I bought. It doesn’t seem like anything I would use for turning, unless I enjoy tools flinging across the room. What is it and what would I use it for?

Ongoing Segmented Whatever... - 32 replies

Since it will be at least a week, probably longer, till I can stock up on pen blanks… and my job has me too busy to get into any project start to finish, I figured there is no reason my little lathe should sit idle. So I screwed a piece of Sapele to a turning plate, rounded it up, and will add bits and pieces of Whatever wood when I have a...

White Residue in Leopard Wood Grain - 15 replies

Just messing around with some leopard wood for the first time, I discovered the white residue looking stuff in the grain. I realize it’s not a residue but rather it’s part of the grain. Still, I don’t like it. Are there any tricks to hiding it or getting rid of it? The photo is what I turned on my mini-lathe, cleaned with al...

Master Grip 12 Piece Set, Worth $100? - 22 replies

I’d like to get started in carving but really clueless about chisels and what are good brands. Master Grip sounds to me like some made in Taiwan cheapies that won’t hold an edge in the softest woods, but this set looks tempting. The only information the seller provides is that it’s a brand new set, never been used. Would thi...

What does your nickname (handle) mean? - 170 replies

I certainly would not stop addressing people by their username just because there is an underscore or numbers in it…. if somebody prefers to be called somnam327 then I will address them by that name, but doing so takes away much of the closeness and informality that helps make LJ forums what it is. That said, I have a really simple requ...

Coming Soon... Free Wordpress Hosting - 4 replies

Wordpress just released version 3.9 (Smith) and it’s awesome! Named “Smith” in honor of jazz organist Jimmy Smith, WordPress 3.9 aims to “close the gap” between what you see when creating posts in the backend of WordPress and what you see published on your site. The 3.9 release includes a raft of improvements that build on features in p...

I will finally be able to afford health insurance. - 738 replies

Last year and several times before, I tried to get health insurance but it just cost way too much. Fortunately, I have my VA health benefits to fall back on. But I don’t want to lean on fellow tax payers… I want to pay my share. Well, tomorrow I am going to shop for health insurance that, finally, I can afford. Thank you President Ba...

Is it real or photoshopped? - 50 replies

I’m guessing it’s photoshopped, or otherwise not real. Why? because looking at the cut… it would take a 30 foot chainsaw to make that cut. Also the large splinter hanging on the side, by the cable. Seems a splinter that big would have fallen off. But I could be wrong. What say you?

Safety Glasses Reminder - 39 replies

At work today I used my brad nailer to put down a small threshold, and I got a big reminder why we should ALWAYS wear our safety glasses. It’s not uncommon for me to not bother grabbing my safety glasses when I’m only shooting a few brads, or other small task. This time I just happened to be wearing them because I was using the table...

RBI Hawk -VS- Bushton Mfg. Hawk - 9 replies

As I’m sure many of you scroll saw experts are aware, RBI closed their doors in 2009 and was subsequently bought out by Bushton Manufacturing. Bushton has made some significant improvements to the Hawk line of scroll saws – all 2 models :). I might have a chance to get my hands on an old RBI scroll saw for just under $300 plus a m...

Questions about Variable Speed and Foot Pedal... - 38 replies

Hi Scrollsaw Users I’m saving up for a scroll saw and want to do a little research in the mean time, so a couple of questions to help get me in the right direction. I don’t need anything super heavy duty but I do want a good saw with plenty of features. That would include: 20” ThroatVariable SpeedEasy Blade Changing, pref...

Remembering Childhood - 6 replies

Every holiday season I find my thoughts wandering back to my childhood. Needless to say, my thoughts have to wander a little farther back every year. I think about the simple things that made me happy. One of the things my siblings and I enjoy very much was watching kid’s shows on our black & white Zenith television – shows like ...

Bandsaw Riser Block and Blade Guide Question - 13 replies

Looks like I might be able to squeeze a decent bandsaw in to my budget pretty soon, and I’d like to get a decent resaw capacity. One that is built with 10” or 12” depth of cut will probably not be within budget, so I’m thinking one that will accept a riser block. What I’m wondering, however, is how does one compensa...

Just curious, what is the RAREST wood you've ever worked with? - 20 replies

I’m a beginner with woodworking, so hoping to learn a little (or a lot) more about the less common woods use in the craft. So what is the rarest wood you have ever worked with? Please elaborate… how did you come across it, how workable is it, what did you use it for… and a photo or 2 if you have it. This inquiring mind wants to...

I'm kicking the habit - 76 replies

I bought a pack of Marlboro and stashed in my freezer because I know the stress will get to me at least a few times before I can say I’m clean free. My objective is to never finish that pack of smokes. I’ve been averaging a pack a day since I was 12… over 41 yeas ago. I think it’s time.

Do you take vitamins or nutritional supplements? - 50 replies

If so, what do you take, why, and does it seem to make a difference? I’ve never been one to take vitamins on a regular basis, and I don’t know much about what vitamins I should take, if any. But I smoke, drink lots of coffee, don’t eat right, and I will turn 54 this January. I’d like to learn a bit more about nutrition...

Catch the Orionid meteor shower this weekend - 8 replies

Just thought some of you might want to check this out. I’m in Chicago so doubt the city lights will allow much of a show here. Usually, waking up before sunrise is a good way to get a head start on the day. On Oct. 21st, waking up early could stop you in your tracks.Blame Halley’s Comet. Every year in mid-to-late October, Earth passes ...

Making due or making do? - 16 replies

What is the proper grammar, making due or making do? For what it’s worth, I need to know for a woodworking article I’m writing, so not completely off topic.
