I am 73 years old and live about a one hour north of Sydney. I first started eating and breathing sawdust in 1955 when I was apprenticed to an ex Royal Navy shipwright as a cabinet maker. His yarns about life in the Navy were more exciting than dovetail joints so after three years I quit and joined the Royal Australian Navy.
I resigned after 21 years (including a stint as an EOD diver in Vietnam) and got myself into the OH & S industry. My hobbies after leaving the Navy were Leatherwork, Scrollsaw work, Woodcarving, Ships -in-bottles, minature ship models,
Ropework, Archery and fishing.

I have been making small jewellery boxes with leather on the lid as well as hand carved designs. I quite often use leatherwork patterns for ideas for carving.

G’Day Mate! I usually say ” Hey Man. ” ! Thank you for looking at my swords. They’ve given me more joy than my sons (don’t tell the boys). I prefer basswood for all three components, the blade with tang, the guard and the handle. If some place needs carving, and from my work u can see that I seek places to carve, the softer woods are forgiving as well as compliant. Most similar wood would be lime wood! Next most available to me would be Vermont Sugar Pine. It is soft, but the strong grain wants to influence your knife. I used Western Red Cedar once to simulate Damascus steel. I’m glad that’s off my bucket list. It was not a carver friendly wood. Is that good? Keep watching for future postings. I’ll tell u more in the near future.
Ciao for now.

Hi Folks, thanks for the warm welcome and advice on using the site. I have been slow in responding to your comments because there is so much on this site to check out. I feel like a kid in a lolly shop – where do I start?
