I suppose growing up in North Wales during the depression and then WWII, I learned to be frugal regarding woodworking. At that time materials were short and my first memory was denailing reclaimed wood and then, sitting on the back step, staightening the nails for reuse on a cobblers' last which I used for an anvil. Both the chicken house and the green house were completely constructed with wood my father and I scavenged.
Today I enjoy the luxury of selected new wood and while I have a great reluctance to throw any scrap pieces away, I have no latent urge to straighten nails any more. In fact, there are times I need defend my wood pile from my "quilt nazi" wife by threatening her fabric stash.
