Another fine finished piece of wood working by Thomas J. MacDonald. During this final installment of the Tiger Maple Slant Top Desk, Mark lends his expertise on how he prepared Tommy’s work for its final coat of finish. In addition to addressing the desk specifically, Mark offers some great general advice that he has found useful through his 25+ career. If you take anything for this video remember: ”Less is Better, be patient. Take your time. Build the finish. Time Time Time” -Mark

Thanks for this series Tommy. I just bought 300 bd ft of tiger maple to make a bedroom set for my son, haven’t committed to doing the finish myself, especially after seeing how great this piece looks. The inspiration is a big help.

very nice video. i agree with you too about the shellac. once i had about 6 coats on my quilt racks it looked great and i started to sand to smooth it and it just lost its luster. so with shellac if you don’t plan on using wax the best is a super light last coat. just to wet it to bring the luster back.

Tommy -
Great series! Thanks for the inspiration. I love the desk, the Tiger Maple grain and the finish. Good solid work with a touch of fun. Hard to beat that recipe!

After the last coat. I usually sand it and do a french polish coat on top to bring back the shine.

Nice. Your blessed to have such a skilled finish man on your side. I think good finish guys are more of an endangered species than good woodworkers.
