This is a Lumberjocks exclusive video!
Thank you so much for the warm welcome to this truly great woodworking community.
Hey guys the cameras are rolling once again in my shop. Al and I have a great conversation regarding finishing considerations for this awesome slant top maple desk. If you have seen any other videos from my shop, you wont be disappointed. Trust me, a little humor goes a long way to break up monotony in the shop and keep spirits elevated . . . especially with the exciting task of detail sanding!
So, sit back and enjoy while the grain of this 50-year old tiger maple pops!
There are a lot of ways to approach this. My preferred method is time well spent choosing lumber with attention to grain matching and flow, impeccable attention to detail, cleaning the work as I go followed by simple well proven finishing techniques . . . in this case oil and shellac.

Absolutely Cool! I learn best through watching and although I probably will not do a big piece like that I do currently do alot turning with figured wood. And will one day get back into small jewelry type boxes. These instructions are going to come in extremely handy.
I’m ready for the next video… Let’s go Mark get over there and do your job!

Excellent video! Thanks for the instruction. This is a beautiful piece and you have truly honored that 50-year old tiger maple. It was very cool to see that awesome grain pop. I always enjoy the banter between you and Al. It is good to see Al back in the shop for a visit and good to see the cameras rolling again!

looking good! nice on the finish too. the main problem with BLO is that people think that it is enough but you need protection. thats where the shellac comes in. can’t wait to see it with the shellac on!

Very nice looking desk. I’m definitely looking forward to the next video. What I saw that I liked a lot was how the figure from the trim seemed to run into the grain on the back part of the desk (if that’s making any sense). I had never thought of something like that, but it was a level of detail that adds to the whole that may get missed by itself, but can make a piece stand out next to a similar piece where such care hasn’t been taken.
I have to admit it, I like it!

Tom, nice job on this video. Anymore, I nearly always start with an oil coat initially. It seems to really make the grain jump out…as you’ve shown beautifully here in the video.
Thanks for posting it.

Great video. Thanks and a remarkable project.
I’ve got some 24” wide maple that I got off a pile at a sawmill. The edges looked like tiger maple, but I’ve never hit the surface with a sander, scraper or anything yet. And it’s now at the bottom of a pile. I guess I need to at least check out what it is. I think I paid 1.50 a bd ft for the whole pile and it had a couple of hundred feet of wood that looked good. We’ll see.
Thanks for the insite on the use of the wood.

Tommy,
Glad to see you back in action. I feel that now being involved in the various communities you will find a resurgence of energy to continue these videos. I’ve seen your posts over on Woodnet too.
I love the way that any figured wood just pops out and shines when it is prepped and finished properly. You have a good start here with the linseed oil. Can’t wait to see the shellac as I am looking into adding this to my skill set. Please be sure to include the ratios for both spray and brush applications.

Nice. I’m glad to see someone else who doesn’t sand above 150 b/f clearcoating. Where’s the footage of your friends tuna sandwich technique.

Tommy,
I grew up in Reading, worked in construction in Woburn, my dad’s family is from Everett. Listening to you guys, the accents, the verbage, and the banter brings back memories of working with the carpinters way back when.
Looking forward to the next video.

Tommy,
Another great video and the slant top desk is just fantastic. Looking at it before and after the oil application hammers your point home about the wood selection. Thanks for all the great advice.
