Part 1: Final Project Proposal 1/30/14

01-30-2014 03:12 PM by Steve Magdinec | 2 comments »

At this point in my creation of a luxurious gun rack, I have accomplished great work. I completed my planning and have cut down and planed the side pieces of my gun rack to the correct measurements. I then used carbon paper to trace my outline onto my cut wood. This is where I am currently at. I have had no problems so far, and hope to be cutting and shaping these two side pieces by next week.

This week in wood shop I have devoted my time in completing my pitching mound. I was thrilled to be able to pitch of it in practice today, as it held up well and did its job. I plan on continuing my work on the gunrack next week. Check out the pictures I posted for the pitching mound.

Part 3: Final Project Progress #4 2-27-14

Finally after a long 2 weeks of working on the pitching mound, I was finally able to start my final project, the gun rack. I already had my wood carved for cutting, so I went ahead and pre-drilled some holes in order to make my life easier on the band saw. After doing a rough cut on the band saw, I was able to have the edges completely sanded and smooth in 2 days. All went well, but for my second piece I will do a closer cut with the band saw to make sanding easier. I hope to accomplish a lot...

Part 4: Final Project Progress #4 3/7/14

This week in wood shop I cut out my traced side pieces for the gun rack. I used the band saw to get as close to the trace as possible and then I sanded down the rest. It took 2 days to sand but most importantly I am happy with the results. Today I am gonna work on designing the top cross section ( I will carve deer antlers into it) and I hope to have that completed by the middle of next week.

Part 5: Gunrack Update 3/13/14

03-13-2014 02:45 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

This week, I completed the sketching and carving out of my top piece. I decided to go with carving deer antlers into the center of the piece. I am very pleased at how it looks, and I’m glad I took my time on the bandsaw. Since the antlers made the wood thin, I decided to glue an additional piece to the bottom, with a piece of walnut wedged in the middle. Unfortunately, I was unable to plane the walnut to the correct length because I blew up the planer. I couldn’t express my pity a...

Part 6: Gunrack Update 3/20/14

03-20-2014 02:30 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

This week I did a glue up on my top piece. I added a piece of walnut and got it glued nice and tight. I drilled pocket holes on the side to make drilling into the side pieces a lot easier. I am now ready to work on the bottom shelf which will accompany an ammo box. This will take place next week.

This week I did not do much with my gunrack besides sanding and cutting my bottom shelf. Hope to have more progress completed next week with some pictures.

Part 8: Gunrack 4-4-14

04-04-2014 02:27 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

Upon building my luxurious gunrack this week in woodworking, I was able to make my shelves to support the ammo box and I also am about done making my bottom piece. For my bottom piece I decided to go with a glue up using cherry inbetween the oak. I did a rustic old fashioned design. In order to finish I just have to smooth the edges and rout my design. I will post pictures next week and hope to begin the assembly of all my pieces.

Part 9: Gun rack update 3-11-14

04-11-2014 06:04 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

Much dedication and hard work has gotten me to where I am today. Finally after countless weeks of fine tuning, reworking, and cutting and carving wood, I am ready to assemble all of my pieces. I set them together today to see what they look like and all looks good, except for one little glitch. This is that my shelve pieces need planed down about another 1/16 of an inch to sit good in the dados. I will fix this on Monday and have all pieces together early next week.

Part 10: Gunrack update 4/24/14

04-24-2014 02:41 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

This was quite a depressing week in woodshop. After all of my hard work, I was finally ready to assemble my pieces a few days ago, only to find out that I measured some pieces incorrectly. I screwed my shelf pieces in and one was shorter than the other. Along with this, my bottom piece was also too short by almost an inch. Getting over my frustrations, I jumped straight into making new pieces and am actually almost ready to stain and reassemble. By next week I will have my new pieces all toge...

Part 11: Gunrack Update 5-1-14

05-01-2014 01:23 PM by Steve Magdinec | 0 comments »

After finding out last week that some of my pieces were incorrect lengths, I am finally done making new pieces. I glued in my new shelves, along with my bottom piece, which I think looks better than the previous one. I currently have the whole shibang all clamped together and will begin working on my ammo box today. So far so good!

Part 12: Gunrack Update 5/23/14

05-23-2014 03:32 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

Finally after months of constructing my fine masterpiece, I am finally finished with my gunrack ( besides for installing my hardware). I recently stained my finished piece of art, along with 2 coats of semi- gloss poly. Next week I will install hangers, hinges, and a door stop. I am more than happy with the outcome and can’t wait to display it on my wall. I will post pictures next week.

Part 13: Gunrack Completion 5-28-14

05-28-2014 02:52 PM by Steve Magdinec | 1 comment »

Yeah! Woooooo! I am finally 100% completed with my gun rack and ready to take it home. I am more than pleased with the outcome and am proud of all the hard work and dedication that I poured into this project. A special thanks to Mr. Santucci for all the help and supplying the wood, I couldn’t have done it without him. Also I’d like to thank Mr. Richard Knox for caring so much about my project and always being there to help when it wasn’t needed. ( he’s also...
