Building The Holtzapffel Workbench #15: The Finished Bench!

485 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 25 comments »

Well it was a longtime coming but I have finished the bench. I’ve been having an issue getting the main face vise to operate smoothly. It worked just fine when I had it mocked up, but once I added the final chop it was grabbing and binding. It took some trouble shooting to find the problem, but in the end the problem was me trusting that power tools can do an accurate finish job. More on that later. First I thought the problem was that the new chop was bigger and heavier. I thought th...

Assembly/work bench

81 days ago by LesB | 8 comments »

This is an idea I have been working on for an assembly/work bench. I posted an earlier blog to see if I could get some ideas and feed back. This is the current status. The overall design can be flexible in size and I have left the storage area under the top open for now but will add drawers, shelves, and cupboard doors in the final construction. The open shelves on the ends may be replaced with racks for small clamp storage but I used the small shelves on another work bench and found it handy...

Marquetry Demo #1: Marquetry Tutorial - VERY rough

260 days ago by TheCaver | 12 comments »

Let me make a disclaimer here. Some people requested a procedural series on this and I threw this together in 17 minutes! There are mistakes and this thing is ROUGH at best, but it will give you an idea on how to get started…Think of it as an outline, not an exhaustive tutorial…..Off we go…. You’ll need these items….Veneer, a craft knife with a new xacto blade (don’t use cheap off brands, the good ones are less frustrating and they don’t cost that ...

Po mans dust collector

248 days ago by wdkits1 | 7 comments »

Back in 1993,I was just starting out creating intarsia and I had just gotten an order from Leichtung Workshops for 440 of my intarsia project kits. I could no longer work out of my little 8×10 shed behind my house so I made the decision to rent a space to set up shop. I found a building for rent for $350.00 a month so I moved everything into it and set up my production line. I had a Delta 14” bandsaw,Delta 6” jointer and Delta 12”planer plus a couple of router table...

Solar kiln #1: from design to construction

394 days ago by Julian | 12 comments »

A few years ago, I had the idea of building a small solar kiln. Well, life happened, and I didn’t have the time or money to build one. Then two weeks ago, my neighbor had a red elm cut down that had been struck by lighning earlier in the spring. I figured that a beautiful elm tree would never just fall into my lap, so I had the tree removal service roll the 8’, 30”+ main trunk into my front yard. After having it milled, I realized that I couldn’t wait an entire year to...

Bandsawn Box #1 #1: Getting the wood ready

693 days ago by Karson | 22 comments »

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it. I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges. ...

Tips for installing inlay

298 days ago by John8059 | 7 comments »

Since it is a little too chilly to work in my shop today, I’ll do a little virtual woodworking to get my weekend fix. I am working on a coffee table with a complicated veneer pattern and inlay banding. Below is the actual top veneer taped and almost ready to glue to the substrate.Since you only get one shot at cutting the grooves for the inlay, I spent a lot of time planning! One thing that concerned me was that I cound not use the flat edge of my router base everywhere so I had to r...

My Sharpening Station Copyright 2-11-2007 Karson Morrison

I’ve noticed some Blogs and questions about sharpening chisels and I thought I give you my experiences and what I’ve designed. I’m getting ready to teach a sharpening workshop for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers club and I was working on my setup and techniques. I own the Tormek Sharpening System , the Makita Sharpening System . I’ve used The Scary Sharp System and I build a modified Scary Sharp setup using cast iron plates and silicon carbide granules on the coarser grits and diamond paste...

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder

299 days ago by David | 5 comments »

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder This was a quick and fun shop project. The material came from a small 2/4 board of gum cherry that was left over from another project. It took care to wrap the grain with respect to the sides and back. I almost missed this and had a “T-Chisel” event which caused me to re-do part of the project. Well, actually I had no choice, as I know the recipient has a critical eye! This is a six-tube scroll saw blade holder designed for a woodworker tha...

and then it becomes....... #6: marquetry conquest

356 days ago by kolwdwrkr | 14 comments »

Well it has been a while since my last posting on this project. As promised I will show my way of doing marquetry and carvings. Remember that these are my techniques, and yours may vary. There are a ton of ways of doing things and I’m sure there’s a lot of ways easier then mine. For instance many of you may prefer to use a router to route out a majority of the material, then use chisels to cut to the line. I use chisels simply because I do the work on my dining room table. I...
