converting between wire gauge and diameter/thickness

I came across an article written by furniture maker Jane Swanson when reading about inlaying silver wire as a decorative feature in a wood project. Following her method requires using an end-mill router bit to excavate a channel having a width that is equal, or nearly equal, to the diameter of the wire to be inlaid. This requires some conversions between the way end-mill bits are specified (by the diameter of the cutting portion of the bit) and the way wires sizes are specified (by their gauge).
