This is my first post here after joining a short time ago. Nearing “retirement”, like many, I’ve finally decided to put time into woodworking, rather than thinking on/off about it for 45 years. My “shop” has a lot of space – it’s the ground level of an old barn. 2/3 of it is a gravel floor, 1/3 is a wooden floor where my Ryobi BT3000 sits. I’ve started on dust collection using the HF DC and 4” S&D pipe. I hope to finish the floor, at least, where shop equipment will sit in the not too distant future. The real challenge with the barn is the degree of openness to the elements. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to substantially reduce the winter dampness. I’m going to setup one of the old woodstoves this year. All in all I’m happy to have the space and will make it work

My first project others have thought as taboo; it is a wood deck for our new soaking bathtub. The decking is made of maple flooring I got from a second-hand store for practically nothing. I used my Ridgid planer to take off the old finish, then glued the flooring to the plywood underlayment, next stage is to dye the maple, then several coats of Varathane. It has been a slow challenging process, but I’ve been learning something new almost daily about wood/woodworking.

I intend to make all our kitchen cabinets in the next year or two, so I’ve not only setting up shop, but beginning to make shop jigs and hope to start on a router table (top at least) before the rainy season sets in…...

Welcome LJ’s. This place is addicting, so watch out. Good luck on the floor. Been in the same position myself. Just “retired” after a 31 year career with a telephone company. Belive it or not after 2 months off, went back to work for them as a contractor this morning. Oh well. It was tohot in the shop anyway to do anything right now.

Welcome a-board! This IS addicting! The best part is the mind meld amongst all the world’s woodworkers. Some great ideas and “Why didn’t I think of that’s?” to be had. Enjoy!
