Old Stanley plane with broken tote and broken side - 4 replies

I came across an old Stanley No. 5 hand plane with a couple obvious problems. The tote was cracked, but since the break was clean, it could probably be glued together. In addition, the “tall” part of one of the metal sides (the high, rounded tab nearest the plane iron) was broken about 1/3 off. Does this plane have any value as a ...

Rust on Hand Tools - 8 replies

I’ve started looking at hand planes at antique malls, and have noticed that the metal surfaces on some are covered with a “bright” rust and on others they look very dark, almost black. Does rust darken with age, or is there something else going on?

Router table insert made from hardboard? - 3 replies

I recently purchased a Ridgid router (R29302) and am planning to make a router table. Several plans online describe using 1/4-inch hardboard for the insert plate. Is hardboard going to be sufficiently rigid, or should I use a commercial insert plate?

Ryobi DP121L drill press: speed not constant - 3 replies

The Ryobi DP121L drill press features a lever to change RPMs. On my unit, after I adjust the speed (say from 1600 rpm to 1200 rpm), the lever slowly goes back to its original position and the RPM goes back to its original value. Is this the “correct” behavior for this drill, or should it maintain the speed I set it to? Thanks.
