Amazing lathe for amazing price

I was looking for a starter lathe, and found the website http://www.edmwi.com/home/edm/page_1225_164/new_electric_wood_lathe__table_top_40_industrial_4.htmlI was surprised with the price. Only $89. I thought it was too good to be true but figured I would give it a try. I thought if the thing ends up being fake or plastic I can always try and sell it on craigslist. When it arrived in the mail I was amazing by the size of the box. After opening I was again shocked. The thing is huge, over 4&...

DraftSight Review

DraftSight Review

I am a huge fan of drafting out my ideas on a digital medium.. specifically DraftSight. Now for those of you who are unfamiliar with drafting programs, this is SketchUp drinking Red Bull while playing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. The Wood Slicer bandsaw blades from Highland Woodworking are awesome. When I first purchased my “Rikon 14 deluxe bandsaw my local Woodcraft store said that the 1/2” blade that came with it was pretty good. I took their advice on that, and also purchased a 3/4” 3TPI Timber Wolf blade for resawing. Both seemed to work, but my results were so-so. For the first real challenge I resawed some green cherry logs for turning blanks. I started with the blade that came with the saw. Meh. It really...

Crystalac Grain Filler

Crystalac Grain Filler

I have recently discovered a product called Crystalac Grain Filler (Rockler, Amazon). It is water based, easy to apply, dries clear and will fill open grain woods like Oak, Walnut, and Koa in 2 or 3 coats. It is the consistency of loose toothpaste and costs about $25/qt. But a quart will last a loooooong time. IMHO, it is hands down the best grain filler I have ever used. It is not granular, doesn’t require thinning, doesn’t need volatile chemical reducers, doesn’t require stain or color to m...
