My First Custom Woodwork Customer! - 11 replies
I was in my shop earlier and my 6 year old friend & neighbor came by to get some scrap wood that’s child-safe. He asked me to make a custom boat and went into details on the specs. It has to be this wide but not TOO wide and long, but not TOO long, and the sail has to be made out of a triangular block. I asked him if he was going to be...

Japanese Hand Tools of Your Dreams? - 2 replies
We have mallets, we have planes, and we even have screwdrivers of your dreams. This one’s for the darksiders who live and work amongst us. Right now I’m using a kataha cross-cut razor saw that cuts just great. Next saw will have to be a rip and then on to the chisels. What do you use and what do you think of them?

Paasche Air Eraser on Wood? - 1 reply
Good Morning, LJs… I searched for ideas on sand blasting, but it appears that the topics discuss larger blasting tools. I have a Paasche air eraser, the size of an air brush, that I use for another hobby. I was wondering if anyone here has used a small blaster like the air eraser on wood to for an ‘etched’ effect and how it ...

My Shop - 5 replies
This is an exclusive photo of the Smallcrafter world headquarters and production facility. I built three work benches…small, medium, and large and have a deckchair as well as stool to sit on due to a problematic back prevents me from standing for very long. Now don’t start in about it not being a ‘real’ shop because it...

Post Hijacking Problem - 5 replies
I went to my post on ‘Gettin’ Ol Is Gettin’ Old’ in this forum to check out a reply to find out that it had been hijacked. It looked like the original had been copied then deleted and the copy posted with a photo of two people sitting in Adirondack chairs. If you click on the photo it went to a retail site . What’s ...

Gettin' Old Is Gettin' Old - 4 replies
As I slowly get farther into ‘middle age’ I find myself wondering about some things while I’m working in my shop. 1. Why does stuff always have to fall on the floor?2. Why can’t I find things when they’re right in front of me?3. Why does the very last piece of oak that I have looks good for what I need but is alw...

Any Other Pipe Smokers Out There - 5 replies
I like starting my day in the shop with coffee and my pipe. I either smoke my Peterson or Ben Wade from time to time while working and find it relaxing. Any other pipe smokers here on LJ?

When A Project Ends Up As Scrap - 15 replies
This happened to me recently. I was making a doorbell chime cover and I was using a piece of 1/2” white oak that was available. I got as far as adding a gentle curving radius to the bottom and those neat arts ‘n crafts windows when the nightmare started: chasing after square sides. I had cut the pieces on my POS table saw and spent ...

Shop Pets - 16 replies
Does anyone have a pet that hangs out in your shop? My cat Tigger hangs out with me as long as I’m not making a lot of noise. My shop is my place of solitude in the mornings where I can sip my coffee, smoke my pipe, and spend time with my pal (he uses me as a back scratching machine).
