What the heck... - 7 replies

Does the rear rail for a biesemeyer actually do? If I have an extention table to the side that goes as far out as the front rail do I really need the rear rail? Mechanically I don’t see a need for it. Speak, jocks.

Old Uni help - 14 replies

Well jocks, today i got a ton done and rebuilt, all painted and lubed. The angular wheel is absolutely amazing. Out of all the saws i have ever used i have never seen one move the angle so effortlessly. But the elevator shaft, what the heck, yall? The thing gives me two turns and seems to bind. I think i have the arbot bracket at the same ...

Off Topic - 22 replies

I’m, not throwing shade, but if you major in Mechanical Engineering, please, before you Google “ME salary”, ask yourself “Is this something that is innate to who I am? Is this something that I have been doing since I was a child and this just furthers what I have in my love of mechanics?” If you just google the s...

Old Machinery Placards - 11 replies

I have been thinking about how to best restore the placards on my old Uni. They all have some ageing and I would like to get them shiny again. Any suggestions or is that a lost cause?

Biesemeyer Hairline Pointer - 7 replies

Does anyone know where I can buy the hairline pointer (magnified would be great) to fit my fence? The one that came on my saw I just bought was broken off. And a web search, Delta search, Amazon search ect. turned up nothing. I cant believe this would not be offered for sale. Its the most fragile part on the fence. As a side note, I am glad t...

Cont. Unisaw gloat and other tools - 50 replies

Jocks,Here is my Unisaw gloat. It is cont. because I had previously posted pics of the saw here http://lumberjocks.com/topics/102858 to get an age for the saw. I had previously thought it would have been a 60’s or 70’s model. But thanks to Jock help I found it was a 1948 model. Yes, the original motor (which I will sell), motor cover...

Off topic, kinda - 2 replies

I’m going back home right now. South Mississippi. Currently I’m traveling down I-65 in nowhere Alabama. By looking around I am reminded why I love North Carolina so much: no freaking pine trees. I hate pine wood, needles, cones, sap, bark and the overwhelming gloomness of the pine trees. If the grim reaper were asked by a shr...

Steelex and North State planers - 2 replies

Any information about this machine would be helpful. I think it is built by Shop Fox therefore Griz, but that is more a guess. Also this dealer is the only one I have seen offer North State tools. If anyone has any experience with either of these, I would appreciate some feedback.(Yes, I did search both brands on LJ, saw some on NS and nothing o...

Can LJ make it so we can "@FellowLumberJock" like facebook? - 17 replies

It would be easier to keep up with conversations if when I did something like ”@FellowLumberJock” in the body of text it would highlight that and they would know something said may need a reply. I know this may be cost prohibitive. Just wondering. thanks,SI

Shaper--how far can I reduce a cutters bore? - 2 replies

I am looking at a 1/2” shaper. If I have 3/4 bore cutters I feel it is safe to use reducers and spin them. How far would you go? 1” and reduce it to 1/2? I have gone 1.25 to 1 before and 1.125 (old machine) to 1”. Or is your greatest limiting factor cutter weight? I really hate buying a 1/2 machine but the price is good.

15" grizzly planer price - 8 replies

I have only worked with grizzly table saws and don’t have as much experience with the planers as I do delta and powermatic. What do yall think about this machine and price. Owner said it needs to be sharpened and cleaned. Other than that it works fine. I thought it a bit high. http://charlotte.craigslist.org/tls/4938441502.html

Things to ask before you get married - 8 replies

I have been happily married for 10 years and wouldnt change a thing. What is it with (some) ladies and painted [spit in disgust] wood? We see a design she likes in Target. “Oh, yeah, I could make that for you. No problem. How about cherry and a nice satin poly finish.” “I want it painted blue.” Now come on, wo...

Table Saw died - 15 replies

I have to post this as a way of coming to terms with my being out of action for a bit. I had tweaked my old craftsman saw in. Had it running as well as one could expect. I had plans on getting an old Unisaw from my former boss when I go back home in July. I figured I could make it. Dads old saw had lasted since the 70’s so what is a few...

Hone jointer knives in the head...While running - 19 replies

Do i start this by saying “talk me off the ledge”? To begin, big thanks to all who commented on the jack screw issue I was having, issue being that they were missing. Now the jack leg I bought the jointer from also prided himself as a professional knife sharpener. I think he placed them in a vice and ran a belt sander over them...

Delta Jointer DJ-15 question - 20 replies

So i got this jointer in good condition for $280 this past weekend. I went to work tweaking it in. And when i got to pulling the knives the owners manual said “loosen these bolts to remove the knives”, Check, “and tighten/loosen these 2 screws to raise/lower the knives”. But as i looked down at “these screws” ...

If I were Making a Whisky Barrel.... - 8 replies

So as i sat there watching the fights the other night a Jack Daniels commercial kept playing (I am more of a Makers guy but thats beside the point). In the commercial they show the staves driven into one side of the barrel head and a cable around it to pull it together. It all got me thinking “How would I make a barrel”. So I kept...

What's wrong with my saw? - 10 replies

I have a mid to late 70s craftsman (which will be replaced soon) “cabinet” style table saw. If the blade is up and I tighten the belt, great. If I lower the blade the belt gets loose proportionally to the amount it dropped. This seems to be kinda new. I have totally cleaned and lubed it to no avail. Anyone else have this issue? I am ...
