My dad purchased a Ryobi AP-12 from Menards years ago.. maybe about 15 years ago. He gave it to me about 5 years ago and I have not used it too much. I just did not find a need for it until this project. So, I started it up, and started to feed a panel and nothing too much happened. Slow, no chips, nothing but a lot of noise.

So, I took a look at the cutting blades and found them to be completely dull. No problem, I will head off to Menards to by a replacement set. Except they no longer sell them. Or Home Depot. Next stop: Amazon. I can get a third party replacement for $30.. and I might still do that. But then I remembered that there's a tool room where I work. So I went down there, and they started the process:

Automotive tire Motor vehicle Tread Vehicle Bumper
Automotive tire Tire Motor vehicle Bumper Tread

The base is an electromagnet, and automatically moves from left to right until the desired amount of material has been removed. In this case, about .007"

We'll see if this buys me some time.

After seeing the second part of your blog, I understand what I am seeing here:). I was very, very confused there for a little bit.

How cool that you have access to such equipment!

Thanks for the blog!

Your Friend,

Nate

Nate,

I understand, I didn't detail the issue too well, and the pics are not great!

The blades perform well...

As I indicated in the previous blog, I wanted to save a few bucks and took my "disposable" Ryobi knives to work and asked the tool room manager to try sharpening them. Instead of trying to match the angle of the knife, he just removed .010" off the back. And the results are impressive. They went from completely dull to razor sharp:

Wood Gas Tool Machine Composite material

Those are some pine shaving left over from surfacing some panels. I'm not sure how many more times they can be sharpened, but for now this is a working solution.

If it works and does not create a hazard, it is a good solution.
