I hear ya. I have been reclaiming stuff all my life. (Not hoarding, just looking at things and saying, I can make something from that) SO, when I met my wife 10 years ago, she was unaware that I enjoyed doing this.
She would roll her eyes, etc…to make a long story short, after she seen what I can do at times, she will come home from work and UNLOAD her trunk, telling me, I saw this on the way home and thought you would like it ! SHE’s a keeper !
Ps. If it ever gets to point you will be on Hoarders, chances are me and a lot of other LJers will be at that audition as well. lol

I posted on my facebook page a request for free used wood, paint, stain etc. Got lucky. I am the dumping off place for all my neighbors. They always call me before they put it out in the trash. :) Good thing I have understanding next door neighbors because I have logs and wood all over the place. :)

We are kindred spirits. Good thing my wife likes to collect at yard sales or I’d be toast.

The best way to get your wood and suppiies. Fortunatly for me my wife will keep an eye out for local stuff and on the local Freecycle page.
My basement is practically sponsored by Freecycle.

As you get settled in Steve, make it a point to let your neighbors see what you do with the material you find. Over time, you might find that you would not even have to go to the dump, the neighbors might come to you with items before disposing of it. I have one neighbor, when he is tossing wood, will just set it over the fence. I don’t usually get anything high grade there, but it is at least free firewood for my pit. I have friends who keep an eye out for broken wood furniture, scraps, and decent pallets. All things that can keep you supplied with small projects for a good length of time.

While I’m not a dumpster diver per say, I’m not opposed to diving if something catches my eye. People who know me call me a wood magnet though. At one point or another someone will call and ask me if I’m interested in a pile of wood or a few chunks here and there. Most of its been yellow pine which I’ve made some pretty nice projects from. I also got a score of about 1500 BF of Aromatic Cedar. I think thats been the best one so far. I have been known to do some pallet recycling from time to time. I’ve even tore down some small houses and garages for the wood, lot of nail pulling there. I’m all for free wood, but have found that I’ve become more selective in my collecting as there isn’t any room to keep a lot of what I come across.

Yea Greg the nail thing is getting old. I have been collect mahogany pallets just brought two more home today. they have 1×2” x 80” boards on them. the first couple I just chopped the wood but I am trying to save these up for a Pergola for the front of the house. But Damn 6 staples per board. I am just collecting and collecting because it is becoming harder to get, forest management and all., which is a Good thing. I am truly envious of you guys up north where I here Maples are considered weeds.Maybe I am exaggerating but I seem to here allot of …”.My neighbor cut this down” or “I pulled this out of the wood pile” and this guy made a work of art with it. I know I am new but we do not seem to have much to pick from down here. WOODCRAFT is closing we do have Constantines which I have yet to visit. A couple of weeks ago I went looking for some 4×4 fir and it felt like I was looking for the holy grail or something. Miami is supposed to have some good places BUT WHO THE HELL WANTS TO GO DOWN THERE!!!(I probably change my profile picture now),. I will keep picking until I get tired of. But what I really need to do IS MAKE SOMETHING!!!.
