Part 1: Hello, world!

05-07-2017 04:23 AM by SauceMan | 0 comments »

Hi all! I’m working on my second furniture build. Now that I saw that my Smallder desk—completed photos didn’t turn into matchsticks, I’m braving another desk, this one for the kids’ room. I decided to go all fancy this time and actually sketch up my plans before building it. Here’s two views of the desk I intend to build: I also went to MacBeath today and bought some Cherry that I’ll make this desk out of. Can you picture the desk n...

Part 2: Doesn't look exactly like an L...

There’s a picture of my completed desktop. I made it over the weekend, leaving the rough lumber in my shop for a week before I started tearing into it. I think it’s very close to the original measurements in my SketchUp plans, maybe off by a quarter of an inch or so. If you look at the grain, you’ll see pretty much all the parts are cut with 45 degree cuts, though you may have thought it would be easier to use square cuts for the L. I want to keep this quick because it’s almost 1pm and I haven’t started yet. I got a new blade and a new belt to put into my table saw, but I really want to get working on my desk. Yesterday was a pretty productive day. I feel like every time I take 8 quarter steps forward, I take 4 quarter steps back. (little woodworking joke for you guys, you can thank me later). Last weekend I got this Diablo blade for my new table saw and spent a fair amount of time trying to square m...

Part 5: Legs, snipe, joints, finish and a clever (I think) 45 degree angle jig!

Hey, It’s been forever since I’ve posted. I’ll keep the words minimal and show my progress as a set of images as much as possible. That should make scrolling through this blog post pretty quick. First, I really need to work on cutting. I now have a 5 HP table saw (or is it a 3 HP saw pretending to be 5?) and a brand new blade, but I get serious burns. That’s what you see on the left of the top-most leg up there. But there they are, 6 legs ready to go! ...
