Total beginner!
By day I'm a computer nerd, so I've caught the woodworking bug as a hobby to get my rear-end out of the office chair, my face out of the screen, my hands off the keyboard, and engage my brain in a totally different way than it has grown accustomed to. What really got me hooked was discovering David Marks' show on DIY, "Woodworks". That's when I realized how much fun it could be and that I might actually be able to do it.
I've got two young children with a third on the way, so I'm very interested in practical furniture-making. I'd love to build up enough skill to be able to provide them each with at least one "heirloom" quality piece. I recently completed my first project - a train table for my son. It's embarrassingly crude and I'm hoping to be able to do it over again once I learn some joinery techniques and get some decent tools. My kids love it though, so that's what really matters I suppose! (And my wife is just being supportive...) =)
Anyway - I'm totally amazed at all of the incredible projects the members of this site are producing! Hoping to gain a little (OK, a lot) of knowledge from you guys!

Hey, welcome to LumberJocks, and great job on that train table! I’ve got a very similar story to yours – brand new to the craft, picked it up as a hobby so I’d have a hobby that wasn’t computer-related (and yet here I am!), and with 2 kids and one on the way. And now I’ll be copying your train table (only calling it a lego table)!
