I am mostly a beginner woodworker. I did the high school shop thing back some 40 years ago (I am 57 now). I worked in the summer for an old guy carpenter hanging doors. I spent 10 years in the Navy as a machinist mate so I have a pretty good background working with tools and measurments, drawings and such.

I have a very limited budget to get started. Right now I have a sliding miter saw, a jointer, a biscuit joiner, a palm sander, a router and various hand tools along with the usual cordless drills. By the end of Feb. 2012 I will have a table saw. Right now I am thinking about the Porter Cable saw at Lowes for $600. That's about the max I can spend.

My main focus is furniture and especially cedar chests. I have just a few years to retire and am hoping to become very skilled by then.

Thanks guys. I’m sure I’ll have a bunch of questions but I’ll lurk awhile and see what answers I can get by reading the old posts. Of course, I have the question of what TS to buy! I should have between $600 and $800, including tax, shipping, whatever. I keep looking on Craigs List but all I see is either junk or very expensive or 220V 3phase. I am willing to do the 220V single phase wiring but not 3 phase.

Have your say...
