Sun Prairie, WI
United States

I am in the process of building an all accessible woodworking shop to my house right now. It is going to be a 24×30 workshop with 10ft that is fully heated and insulated. I am heating it with a Modine HotDawg heater. It is powered with a 100A pull from my house. I will have floor outlets in the middle of the shop floor in 220V and 110V for things like my table saw, planer, jointer, etc. I plan of setting up a full dust collection system. I am looking at a 2HP Grizzly cyclone. Still in the market for a lot of tools. Should be fun to watch develop.

Well it has been a while now since I have updated.. TO be honest this is the first time that I have updated since the original post. It has been a long time coming but it is done. I finished the shop in the beginning of July. Since then I have been busy outfitting it with cabinets and carts for my tools. I still have plenty to build though. I will post some of those pics in the projects.

Well the construction went pretty smooth… NOT!!!! It always seemed like I was forking out more cash for something. I think in the end I was only about six grand over budget. I was making trips to Menard daily. Then I had to re-frame one of my garage doors THREE TIMES!! The electrical went pretty smooth. No it actually did. There was a little misplacing of a few switches and lacking of another one but all in all it is good. I have plenty of 100 and 220 to go around. I did take the 100A service from the house and I am glad that I did. Granted the biggest load that I would pull right now is about 50A, but there is plenty of room for two people to work in there so who know. The insulation is blown cellulose and should keep me plenty warm in the winter time. Drywall went up in no time and they had they had it finished in no time. Got it painted as well. Did not finish to inside standards but it is good enough for a shop. I would have like to finish it more but didn’t want to pay the extra. And the windows, I love them!!!! They let in so much light that I dont even need to turn on the lights in the middle of the day if I dont want to. I have an 8×8 garage door inthe back of the shop that when I open it up it 1)brings in LOTS of light, and 2)let the air flow through to keep it cool and dust free-ish. And the lights, I have 9, that right 9 T8 four bulb fixtures spaced pretty evenly through out the shop. I have a total of 36 6800K light bulbs. Very bright.

I just recieved my Penn State 2.5HP cyclone the other week. That is going to be going up hopefully before bow season starts. And I also plan in getting an air filter for the place as well. I did not get the heater installed due to some miscommunication between me and the contractor, but that will be put in this fall. I also plan on getting some doors put in to separate it from the garage as wll. I will post and the update are getting done.

It has been a lot of fun watching it come together and finally get to a point to where I can work. It would have been a lot more fun to have done most of the work myself, but as we know, folks in wheelchairs don’t do well with things like this. But there are many more adventure within the shop that I am tackling daily. But one thing that I will say is that having an accessible shop with accessible tools is going to make all the difference. Thanks for reading.

Sac

You have a nice start on your shop and it sounds like this is going to be a nice shop in which to work. I will be looking forward to seeing your progress photos when you get the opportunity to post them.

Sac, this is looking more and more like a shop. Most of us would be envious to have this much space to roam around between the tools. But I am sure once the cabinetry and other tools go in there it will fill up fast. But you do have the beginnings of a gorgeous shop.
