The loss of a Grandfather

Blog entry by Rustic posted 121 days ago 341 reads 0 times favorited 18 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Yesterday at about 11:00 am my Grandfather went to be with his Lord. He was 85. He suffered from throat cancer AND lung cancer. He had a full life. I went to Flint Last weekend to visit with him and he seemed fine. The Nurse last week had said 4 weeks and then on Mon said 2 weeks. So we have been preparing for this. All his children were in the house. He just slipped away in peace. We are all thankful for that. My greatest memory was growing up and one time in particular my family visited them in Paradise, Michigan. He and my grandmother took me out on a lake fishing. If I remember correctly we caught enough bluegill and perch to feed a small army. So as a tribute to hiim and that memory. I have another wooden hook that I made that will be laid to rest with him. He is also a WWII vet. He will be missed.

That is sad news Rick. A good grandfather is a gift and a true loss when they leave. Like Rich says, hang on to the memories.

Rick, I am sorry for your loss. But as a grandfather myself I can say that my grandchildren are absolute treasures. I cherish every minute I get to spend with each of them. I am sure that your grandfather felt the same about you as well.

Thanks to all. It was almost as if he held on ‘till my wife and I went to see him. So I do feel very honored. I am planning on making a special picture frame to hold my Grandparents picture.

It sounds like he has a great family, and has inspired you for good things in your life.

My hero’s are the parents who take care of their children, and children who take care of their parents.
Sometimes I look at the people who have done extraordinary things in their lives and hope I have the strength to perform as well if the challenge were ever to land in my lap.

I find myself studying history and being even more in awe of the sacrifices my grandparents generation made during the Second World War.

Peace be with you and yours my friend.

Today was a tuff day. We had the viewing and a forget me not ceremony by the DAV. thati this was the perfect time for me to honor him as a vet. tomorrow is the funeral and I am very honored to be a pall bearer for him. I found out today that during WWII he landed in France and marched to Belgum. He also received the purple heart from either a grenade or motar round shrapnel in the hip.
