Cherry Chest

There is a whole lot about this piece that won’t make sense to you.
It’s exactly what I wanted though, with one exception. I wanted an extra 1 inch between the base and the case that was cut to the exact measurement of the routed piece. Just plain forgot till it was too late.
Also I had some tear out of the dowel holes on the face plate under the lid.

No matter, I’m keeping this one till I get my walnut living room furniture built anyway.

I intentionally put the two pieces of padauk in there. I thought, at least for my taste that an all cherry box is rather boring and I like the simple statement if gives.

The walls are very thick because I was trying a new form of construction which makes mitered corners only a decoration, not structure, and has hidden joinery.

Shown after one coat Arm R seal over shellac sanding sealer and after 320 g sanding.

You may well ask yourself ‘why didn’t he make the top hide the end grain. One, I like end grain, two, it gives some color on the sides.
