For Christmas I only have my in-laws and kids to worry about. Since my kids are not ready for fine furniture I won’t bother for them, but the in-laws can handle it in their nice homes.
I like those balancing wine bottle holders. I decided to make my sister in-law one that has a clock balancing instead of a wine bottle seeing they don’t drink. The supports are made from padauk and the clock will set in a turned walnut tube about 4 inches long. If I need a counter balance I’ll turn a walnut ball for the other end. It’s almost impossible to calculate the weight ratio’s before you make it.
My father in-law has just beat pancreatic cancer, but during the process he gave me a couple very old planes made from wood and sold in various hardware stores back east. They are in pretty bad shape and wont plane again so I’m restoring the finish as well as I can and then I’ll seal them with a semi-gloss and make a dedicated walnut shelf and give them back for Christmas. These are plans his grandfather used, and the metal is still hard and sharp. I may keep one and replace it with an old one I have laying around.
