What Finish

I’m getting ready to seal my Adirondack chair. It’s made from white pine so it needs to be a good sealer.

I have some varnish which I picked up to compliment the redwood stain I used (oil base). The wood had two coats of Charles Neil color conditioner on it before that. I can go with shellac, as soon as I can find 190 proof denatured alcohol, or use oils or wax.

What would you do?

I’d rather use spar varnish on an outdoor piece like that.

I agree with Paul. Spar varnish.

Cheers!

I agree with Paul too. All you need for shellac is off the shelf denatured alcohol .

Russ
Spar is a type of finish. It’s made for heavy duty outdoor uses. Here’s a brand I’ve used that worked great.

Jim, as it turned out, that’s what the paint guy said at Lowes and I have some. It looks good. I just finished the first coat.

If you have a good brush it should be fine. I’m betting it’s looking great.

Yeah, I cut the back to a rounded shape and ran over the whole chair with a stain rag one last time yesterday, and it has one coat of Spar on it now. I made sure it didn’t run and got a good covering everywhere. I may just do the arms again tomorrow, there is wear on that surface.
