The Problem -

In my first shop lay-out, I had my bench positioned along a wall under a small window. I had my tool chest at the end of the bench, and pegs and racks for various tools on the wall above, all within easy reach. This was a great set-up for a number of years.

As time went on, I grew tired of constantly have to remove saw dust and shavings from inside my tool chest … so, I decided to move the bench to the middle of the shop for 360° access, and build a tool wall in the corner …

… this left the original pegs and racks, now cluttered with all sorts of things, as an eye sore above my sharpening station.

So, being inspired by Smitty's most wonderful little Nail/Screw Cabinet, I have decided to take the time and clean up this area. Besides that …

Thanks, Smitty, and thanks for the inspiration! I'm thinking something with Ambrosia maple and painted pine. I started watching Babylon Berlin on Netflix the other day and saw a great little drawer/shelf unit … thought I'd give it a try!

Good luck, Ron! I'll be interested to see what you come up with. I'm building a till for my rasps & files at the moment, and once the box swap is done, I'll be moving on to a plane & saw till. Might actually be able to work with a 4' board on my 8' bench at that point. :-/

It is amazing how long this project will take. BUT once you get it done, it will same you that time and more. So handy to know where everything is and able to pull out a drawer and get the right hardware.

This ought to be interesting. Organizing your shop just takes time and patience. It can always change just with the habits of building different things. A set up now won't be as productive a year from now. I'll tag along to see what you come up with. Nice jack plane. I posted a 100 year old liberty bell plane rebuild last year that was always stuffed in a drawer until now. I use it once in awhile. Had to make room for that. Good luck

Thanks, Dave. I've changed my shop around about four times in the last twenty years. The last big change was after building and making room for my Hand Crank Drill Press.

Shouldn't you be able to work with at least a 7' board on an 8' bench?
You'd think that, wouldn't you? I've got six saws and eight or nine planes sitting on the benchtop at the moment, though. Plus a couple chisels, a router plane, my dovetail saw, marking knives, pencils, straightedges, squares and other odds and ends that are in-use building the rasp & file till. And then there's the seven or eight different glue bottles that need to have a home of their own, too. When I needed to rip a 2' long piece of poplar in half this morning, I used my shop-stool as a sawhorse because I didn't have enough clear space on the bench.

I should really take a picture now for the "before" but it's kinda embarrassing.

Thanks, Kelly. Yeah, Smitty's little cabinet is awesome. I just hope mine can compare. Hey, white walls in your shop are just a couple of hundred bft of ship-lap and a gallon or two of white-wash away! Go for it ….

Isn't it amusing that our wood shops are a perpetually evolving work in progress? We think we have found the ultimate shop setup until we see some shelf, cabinet, bench, rack, chest, or fixture that we just HAVE to integrate into our own workspace. Then we end up re-arranging the entire operation to again become the ultimate shop setup. Then we read some damn forum or blog post. We see some shelf, cabinet, bench, rack, chest, or fixture that we just HAVE to integrate into our own workspace…..Then we go to an antique store or estate sale and find some new tool that we HAVE to add to our collection. Then we end up re-arranging the entire operation to make space for this new doo-dad and again become the ultimate shop setup.
Oh…Wait… here's the parts to that woodworking project I started a year ago. Why haven't I finished this? Perhaps it's because I've been too busy pursuing the ultimate shop setup!

Oh…Wait… here s the parts to that woodworking project I started a year ago. Why haven't I finished this? Perhaps it s because I've been too busy pursuing the ultimate shop setup!

- handsawgeek
Ed, I have the tendency to start a project and see it through to completion, so rarely do I stumble upon parts to that woodworking project started a year ago. Being a minimalist, I'm not that into doo-dads as much as I'm into organization. I've changed my shop around but four times in the last twenty years … mostly for better utilization of natural light, as I'm 100% unplugged.

The Problem

Kudos on all of that. I'm really guilty of having several woodworking projects going at the same time. And that's not to mention a few model rocket builds on the side. Great to hear that you are a minimalist. I'm heading into that direction as well as can be attested by my latest blog series. Still have a ways to go to achieve the ideal minimal workspace and tool set. I think the hardest part of getting into the minimalist mindset is accepting the concept of 'less is more'. I have a tendency to hold on to every scrap of wood and every piece of hardware I run across. There's always that nagging 'I might need this someday' thought tendency.

I may be a minimalist when it comes to tools, but wood is something else all together! See my thread on Scraps. I probably keep more scraps than I should!

Considerations and Design

Considerations and Design -

I want this cabinet to house my molding planes, jack plane, and various pieces of hardware. Currently, I have cans of stain and assorted chemicals all over the shop. I thought this cabinet might be a good way to corral all of these cans onto its top.

But first I need to think about some dimensions. I have 22-1/2" between rafters …

… and 36" from the top of my sharpening station to the wall plate. So my cabinet will have to fit within those dimensions.

I want my molding planes at the top of the cabinet, so the depth needs to be at least 10".

The current nail bin projects over the sharpening station by 4". I think I can get by increasing this by 2-1/2" … especially if the overall height of the cabinet does not exceed 30".

As to the inside width … I need at least 17-1/2".

So … after a bit of drafting … This is what I have so far!

The cabinet will project 11-3/16" at the top and 6-1/2" at the bottom. It will be 22-1/2" wide and 30" high. The top cubby is 8" high. The second cubby is but 4" high, allowing the jack plane to lay on its side. The remainder of the height will be divided into drawers as shown.

Given that I'm going to paint this cabinet … I'm off to Lowe's to buy a couple of 1×12s. I'm thinking the drawer fronts will be Ambrosia maple with turned walnut knobs … we'll see.

Being quite productive yesterday, getting the parts roughed out and the sides shaped, I was going to give this cabinet a rest until I got back from Alaska, but …

… it didn't take too long to pack and besides the plane doesn't take-off until tomorrow afternoon … so, I thought perhaps I'd take some time and cut a dovetail or two …

Two led to four, four led to twenty … once all the tails were cut, and I squared things up with the help of a square chisel guide …

… I then marked all the pin boards.

With the tail boards resting quietly out of harms way …

I used a fret saw to remove the waste from the pin boards, and once again squared things up with the chisel guide.

Ruler Wood Tool Office ruler Copper tape

After just a bit of tweaking … this thing was looking like a cabinet … or at least the shell of one!

That didn't take as long as I thought it would. I can now fly out with a sense of accomplishment!

As I look at the pictures of your "Mystery Cabinet" I can't help thinking that I would probably take way more time than you to make the cabinet with my machinery. Your ability is amazing….

Dividers

Dividers -

I decided to have twenty drawers in this cabinet to store nails, screws, and various other hardware. Twenty drawers will require three vertical dividers and four horizontal dividers. I decided to tackle the verticals first. I have through dados on the top face of the cabinet bottom and stop dados on the bottom face of the jack plane shelf. As with half-blind dovetails I can only saw so far to form the shoulders of a stopped dado … no problem … I'll just use the corner of the chisel to deepen the kerf.

As with the through dado … I removed the waste with a chisel …

… and voilà … a nice crisp stopped dado!

After a quick dry fit to make sure everything was cut correctly …

… I marked the location of the horizontal dividers.

I then gang cut the half-laps in the verticals.

For someone who eschews machines you certainly work like one! I took up hand tools because I liked the pace, your a regular Galloot in a wind storm. Nice progress Ron, I'm enjoying the build.

After cutting and fitting the last of the horizontal dividers, I glued everything together and gave this cabinet a few coats of whitewash to match the walls.

I cut the first row of Ambrosia maple drawer fronts …

… the rest will be cut sequentially from these two boards. I just love the curl. I'll end this blog here, and post the finished cabinet as a project once I complete the twenty little drawers. Click here for the finished cabinet.
