« Part 10: Another Weekly (Sorta) Update... Part 11 of Bunk Beds for the Boys series Part 12: Two Week Update... »

Hey all,

Well, I finally got the ladder done on the bunk beds at the first of the weekend. Then, it was time to sand. Now, I am probably like most of you and really do not like the sanding part. However, it is a job that must be done. Since I have just started, I am just now realizing how much sanding there is on this job. It will take me the better part of this week and probably some of next week to get it all done. But, I will get it done. Like a friend of mine likes to point out, you eat an elephant one bite at a time. Other than sanding, I have to find some time to make a drying stand that I am going to use with the headboard and then footboard. That will make the painting progress much easier.

So, just to tally things up, at the end of the weekend, I am ready to start painting the posts for the safety rails and the sides of the ladders. I am currently working on sanding the ladder steps and the safety rail slats. I will be happy if I can get the ladder steps and the footboard slats sanded this week and ready for finish this weekend.

Now that most of the work is over on this I can get to work on the playground for the kids. You can bet that I will be doing that while paint and finish are drying on this project.

I will try to post a little more as I go along on the finishing fixtures that I will use. I hope all of you will continue to look on, and I hope you will start following the progress on the playground (I will start updates there next week).

Thanks for following this. I cannot wait to show the finished product.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures. Finishing is the worst part of woodworking for me.

Hi Rob,

You just can’t sit still can you? You haven’t even finished one major project and are starting on another one!!!!

Oh well, it beats sitting in front of the television. Finishing is a process that I particularly enjoy. It is one that should take as long as the actual construction, itself. I know that sanding is tedious but, like mowing, it is a process whereby you can simply get it done without a lot of concentration. Sanding, staining and applying a finish coat brings out the beauty of the project that you have created. It is what showcases your construction efforts.

Keep the post coming. I have enjoyed participating in this with you and am looking forward to seeing the playcenter as well.

I like the finnishing process. i put on some of my favorite tunes and get lost in the process. it is kind of theraputic to me.
