1467 days ago by degoose | 22 comments »

Just a sneak peak of a new drunken weave board I am designing,, still in the prototype stages at this time but will continue with it until I am happy with it ..this is only a dry fit to see if the cuts are OK and what adjustments need to be made...

David's [aka Patron] double curve..my version of the jig? #3: Just kidding!

1466 days ago by degoose | 8 comments »

Basic 1/4 ” plywood.. mark a line at a diagonal across the board.NB. the sharper the angle the longer the piece that can be cut.Inset two bearings on this line 19” on centre to enable the use of the 9.5” Radius template from the first jig with single curve. Fit a bolt in the righthand bearing and fit to the bearing in the base unit.. turn on bandsaw and cut the curve till you reach the line and then change pivot points to the left hand side of both the jig and the base unit ...

That was the mistake! - Inlay Banding

1487 days ago by John8059 | 13 comments »

I am finally working on this project again and ran into another problem. You can find out how I got this far from blogs I posted earlier. Last time I showed how I set up guides to cutting the inlay banding grooves. I eventually got all the inlay banding installed, but when I went to sand it flush with the veneer I found I could feel that the resulting surface was uneven. If I could feel it, imagine how bad it was going to look finished! (Keep in mind my hands are trained to feel irregula...

Dehumidifier Kiln

1521 days ago by bigwoodturner | 11 comments »

Most of you are not going to turn on as large a scale as I do so you are not going to need as large a facility as I use. I am going to talk about what I call a coffin kiln. By enclosing an area under a wall mounted work bench about the size of a coffin you will be able to dry several weeks worth of turning. Frame the area in or simply build a framed box of the same size. If you are building under a bench your door will drop down and if you build a free standing box have the lid open like ...

Cutlist and Layout from Sketchup

1811 days ago by daltxguy | 307 comments »

If you’re a fan of Sketchup for creating woodworking models, then the next obvious step is to use Sketchup to help you create cutlists and layouts. Sketchup plugin Cutlist 4.1 does just that. CutList 4.1 sketchup plugin helps you determine how much of each material you need to produce your design, taking into account nominal sized lumber with allowances for finishing to final size. Then it goes one further and lays out all of the pieces on boards or sheet good sizes of your choosing. Th...

Curved Doors; Raised panel & Six light glass #9: Inside curved panels

1664 days ago by Les Hastings | 10 comments »

I just got through doing a project that hand some curved raised panels, but instead of being outy’s these were iny’s. I go through the same process to make the panels the only difference is the way the profile on the edge is run. I purchased a horizontal router table from Woodhaven to help get these made and a vertical raised panel router bit that matched the all the flat panels on the project. Like I said the process is really close to the same, its just the way location of the...

Shop Skills #1: Cabinet Scrapers Exposed!

1644 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 47 comments »

The buzz about scrapers… Lately, talk of the cabinet scraper and the frustration that this little tool inflicts on a character has created some buzz in the LJ community. This simple, inexpensive, and very effective tool also frustrates me, but for a different reason. I see many people missing out on the joy of using this tool because they are fed too much information that clouds the simple truth. On the other hand… On one hand I appreciate the histories and detailed accou...

Celtic Knot Pens #1: One way to do it

2112 days ago by Gary | 16 comments »

This was requested from multiple sites, so I did one for everybody. Here’s some photos of my process;I only had enough time to do a two-ring knot, but it’sall the same to make a four-ring knot accurately if you follow these steps. This shows the miter sled, the length of contrasting wood for the slices, and the bloodwood blank I’m going to use. I’ve already squared the blank so that all four sides are the same size.I randomly pick a side and mark it 1.Side 2 i...
