Saturdays can be tricky for me. I want to work in my shop. My wife wants us to go out somewhere… anywhere. Today we struck a happy medium. I took her out shopping for baby stuff (we’re working on an adoption) and she didn’t sigh even once when I pulled the car into the Woodcraft in Addison..
I had my #5 Bailey with me so I could check out a Hock blade but they didn’t have any in stock. I ended up buying a Pinnacle blade by IBC. I also bought a set of Groz engineering squares. I’ll do a review on them later but I will say that I was a little disappointed that the IBC blade was not nice and flat.
Finally returning home I got to work finishing a new shooting board that I started on Friday. I’m quite pleased with it…
I also flattened the IBC blade and gave it a much sharper edge (am I giving away the details of my future review?)
While I was at it, I pulled out an old #4c that I had been meaning to refurbish and put a new edge on its blade. I also got a little crazy and started polishing the body a bit.. Look, SHINY!
I also pulled out the fleet for a little show and tell..
From left to right..
A pretty darn old #6
A fairly old #5 with a brand new (hand flattened and honed) IBC blade.
A somewhat old #4 that has been maniacally cleaned up..
A #3 with a chipped blade (going to get a Hock for this one)
A Veritas low angle block plane (with all bells and whistles)
And in the background is a WWII era #5 that I recently obtained. Its in really nice shape, just needs a good cleaning and tune up..
BTW, does anyone know of good supplier of phenolic plywood that is not Rockler or Woodcraft? Their prices are insane..
