Any of you following my incoherent ramblings know that I tried out a new Stanley Sweetheart Low Angle Jack Plane. Well I use the word “tried” kinda loosely because it was in such bad shape that I ended up returning it the next day.
So strike one for me, let’s try another swing at this..
I just ordered the Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane.
I also seriously considered the Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Jack Plane
I went with the Veritas mainly because I like the Norris style adjuster and the set screws in the body of the plane. These screws prevent any lateral movement of the blade and make setup a little easier. I first got to try this out when I bought a Veritas Low Angle Block Plane a few months ago and I loved it.
The thing is, while the quality of Veritas has always been considered extremely good, Lie-Nielsen is considered LEGENDARY! Not only that, but when you figure in shipping, the Lie-Nielsen is only $18.50 more expensive. It is only $6.00 more expensive if you buying it through Japan Woodworking’s website. I think it is interesting that Lee Valley’s website has the Veritas listed as a Bench Plane while Lie-Nielsen correctly calls their product a BLOCK Plane.
right now everyone in the Lie-Nielsen camp thinks I’m out of my cotton pickin’ mind I know, I know…. (^_^)
Not that I want to see a blood bath on my blog, but what do you guys think of these planes?
Oh to heck with that, FIGHT!!
I suspect I’ll be taking delivery sometime around next Friday. I think that might make this a good time to build a new shooting board.
