I have 35 yrs. in carpentry, from framing to finish and built ins. I still love it and learn something new everyweek. I'm at a stage now where I prefer to do fine detailed trim and custom built ins. It's time consumming with drawing plans, mocking up and getting the installation to fit like a glove. But, when it's finished I've got a creation and my clients are happy. I've also started building furniture. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Early on I spent 2 yrs working in a lumber mill. I worked the woods cutting, skidding and green chain, tail cut in the mill. We select cut hardwoods, nominal and dimensional. It was hard work but I learned a lot and had one of the best bosses I ever worked for. I reflect once in awhile and think of the close calls, which come with the territory, and the funny things. Fall a tree with an unseen wasps nest and I'll show a record 100 yrd. dash with hurdles to boot.
I'm a little concerned about some of the construction and finish work that people call me about. A lot of it is just plain rushed and sloppy. I swear a blind man without a square could have done better. If you don't like what you do and have pride in your work, do something else for liiving.

Welcome to Lumber Jocks! This is a great place to get – or give – advice about woodworking on the forums and the project posts are a wonderful source of new ideas. I look forward to seeing your projects and posts.

To get the most feedback on your projects, it’s best only post 1 or 2 at a time. This way you will get feedback over several days and from a wide variety of members.

Please enjoy your membership.
