In search of large Maple blanks for dough bowls - 3 replies
Howdy folks. I’m in search of some Maple large enough to make dough bowls. Preferably Ambrosia or curly Maple or anything with some nice figure. The bowls I’m wanting to make range between 15-22” long, 8-14” wide and 4-5” tall. I’m asking if anyone has something this size laying around that wouldn’t mind...

Finishing is not my strong suit - 21 replies
I need help ladies and gentleman. As the title states “finishing is not my strong suit.” In fact, I’m terrible at it. I have been known to combine several different finishes to achieve one finish for one bowl not really even knowing the purpose of one particular finish. Some turn out ok and others, well, not so much. My bowls r...

Got Spruce? - 5 replies
What’s up jocks, I’m looking for some spruce lumber if anyone has some for sale or knows of a good source for some. I plan on building a guitar. Trying to figure out if I’m a luthier or not. So far I know that I’m NOT a mechanic, tennis pro, dish washer, concrete man or trust fund baby….. among other things. I may j...

Question about pecan logs - 20 replies
What’s up jocks! I scored some pretty hefty pecan logs and am planning on having them cut into slabs to make tables and what not. I’m going to have them milled pretty thick and the only thing I’m a little bit worried about is the drying process. I don’t on a kiln nor do I have access to one so I’ll be air drying the...

Is it just me? - 4 replies
What’s up LJ’s, is it just me or has the price of wood, particularly bowl blanks gone out of the roof? I took a break for a while and am getting back in the swing of things and I am shocked at some of the prices I am seeing blanks go for. Did I miss the boat? Did everybody else get rich off there woodwork while I was out and becom...

Which set would you get? - 3 replies
Just curious. If money was no object, and you wanted/needed a new set of gouges, what brand would you choose. I personally would be torn between Two Cherries and Pfeil, leaning more towards the Two Cherries. Or would you piece together a set of old, used but in good shape, vintage gouges, such as S.J. or J.B. Addis, Henry Taylor, Buck Bros, o...

Well I just got back from the ER after taking SOMEONE’S advice to get back to the shop and make something. I won’t say who gave me this advice, but his initials are RANCE,haha. I was working on a bowl when my vintage S.J. Addis gouge attacked me resulting in stitches in my left thumb and index finger. Rance I’ll be needing a...

How to veneer a guitar pickguard? - 6 replies
Hey folks, I got a new bass recently and am wanting to make it, well, more my own, more unique. I was looking at changing the pickguard from the plain (boring) white one to maybe a perloid or tortoise shell one, but I can’t find any aftermarket pickguards for this bass. I’m sure I could have one made but that would cost more than ...

Hey everybody, I have been talked into trying to sell some of my bowls at our local “Green Market” next weekend and have a question for you. Finish on a natural edge burl question. - 6 replies
Hey folks, I have got several different burl blanks (Red Malle, Brown Malle & Maple burl) that I am fixing to start carving bowls out of. They all have the pointy, sharp, natural texture, for lack of a better name. I will be leaving this on them. The two Malle burls will be all natural on the outside and the Maple will have the natural edg...

Can anybody help? Any suggestions? - 3 replies
Hey everybody, I need a little help here locating some things. I recently turned a key chain for my girlfriend and well, it just looks unfinished and not very professionally made. (i’m no professional, so that could be part of it). The one I made is just a simple piece of spalted maple turned into a solid cylinder shape about two inc...

Widespread Panic, Travelin Light. Travelin light was written by JJ Cale. This version is distortion heavy. Not sure why. It doesn’t sound like that on the dvd. Still good though.
